Photos: First Lady Renews Home Gardening Campaign, Harvests Fresh Vegetables at Presidential Villa

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her call for Nigerians to embrace home gardening as a practical step toward enhancing food security, following another successful harvest from her vegetable garden at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The latest harvest was disclosed in a post by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on its official X handle on Tuesday, which stated that the First Lady paid a routine visit to the garden on Monday to harvest fresh vegetables cultivated under the Every Home A Garden initiative.

According to the report, the garden, established about two years ago within the Presidential Villa, continues to produce a variety of nutritious vegetables, including spinach, waterleaf and fluted pumpkin.

After the harvest, Senator Tinubu shared part of the fresh vegetables with members of her staff, while encouraging Nigerians to cultivate the spirit of compassion by sharing with others.

The home garden forms part of the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative, launched in July 2024 to encourage household farming as a strategy for improving food security and reducing the impact of rising food prices on Nigerian families.

Speaking at the inauguration of the garden, Senator Tinubu explained that the initiative was designed to demonstrate that even limited household spaces could be transformed into productive gardens capable of supplying nutritious food for families.

The initiative was introduced alongside the Every Home A Garden competition, aimed at encouraging women and families across the country to cultivate vegetables within their homes.

The Presidential Villa garden initially featured crops such as spinach, waterleaf, bitter leaf, scent leaf, ewedu, okra and lemongrass, and has remained a key part of the First Lady’s advocacy for healthy living, household farming and environmental sustainability.

Senator Tinubu has consistently urged Nigerians to adopt home gardening as a cost-effective means of improving nutrition, promoting self-sufficiency and supporting the country’s broader food security agenda.
