When a village’s only school begins to collapse: Mahuta community cries for help

Residents of Mahuta Village in Kudan Local Government Area of Kaduna State have appealed to the government and well-meaning Nigerians to urgently intervene in the deteriorating condition of the community’s only primary school, warning that the lives and future of hundreds of pupils are at risk.

During an interview with Mal. Nasiru Hussaini Mahuta, a community leadership representative, he described the state of the school as a major concern for residents, saying the learning environment had become unsafe due to collapsed roofs, cracked walls and dilapidated classrooms.

According to him, despite the poor condition of the school, pupils continue to attend classes daily with hopes of becoming doctors, teachers, engineers, lawyers and future leaders.

“We are not asking for luxury. We are only asking for a safe and decent place where our children can learn and pursue their dreams,” Mal. Nasiru said.

He explained that the school is the only public primary education facility serving Mahuta Village, making it the foundation of learning for generations of children within the community.

Mal. Nasiru therefore called on the Executive Chairman of Kudan Local Government Area, the member representing Kudan Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, the member representing Makarfi/Kudan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, the Senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial District and the Kaduna State Government to urgently renovate or reconstruct the school.

He also appealed to philanthropists, corporate organisations, non-governmental organisations, community associations and public-spirited Nigerians to support efforts aimed at restoring the school to a safe and conducive learning environment.

According to him, the school urgently requires new classrooms, proper roofing, furniture and other basic educational facilities to provide pupils with a dignified atmosphere for learning.

He lamented that although politicians regularly seek the support of the community during elections, the educational needs of Mahuta’s children have continued to receive little attention.

Mal. Nasiru stressed that investing in the rehabilitation of the school would not only improve access to quality education but would also contribute significantly to the long-term social and economic development of Mahuta Village and Kaduna State.

He reiterated that the community’s appeal was not a request for charity but a call for justice, urging the relevant authorities to act swiftly before the situation worsens and places more children at risk.
