U.S. Embassy, Lagos Consulate to Close for Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This was disclosed in a statement released by the embassy on Sunday.

The closure marks the federal holiday dedicated to commemorating the life and achievements of the late Martin Luther King Jr., the iconic leader of the American Civil Rights Movement who fought for equality and civil liberties for Black Americans.

King Jr., who delivered the historic “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C., became a global symbol of nonviolent activism and social justice.
