When Experience Speaks Louder Than Ambition: The Ganduje Case

There is an old saying that “experience is the best teacher.” In public administration, where decisions shape institutions and policies affect millions of lives, that saying carries even greater significance. Leadership is often tested not during moments of comfort, but in periods of uncertainty, when wisdom, patience and institutional knowledge become invaluable assets.

Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s public career reflects this principle. Over several decades, he has accumulated experience that cuts across academia, the civil service, diplomacy, executive governance and national party administration. Whether one agrees with every political decision he has made or not, few would dispute that his journey through public service has been both extensive and consequential.

Unlike many politicians whose careers revolve solely around elections, Ganduje’s foundation was built within the structures of public administration. A holder of a PhD in Public Administration, he combined academic knowledge with years of practical service in the Kano State Civil Service, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), and the Lake Chad Basin Commission before ascending to elective office.

As the saying goes, “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” The complexity of these assignments exposed him to policy implementation, institutional coordination, human resource management and intergovernmental relations, skills that later became evident during his years in public office.

His eight years as Deputy Governor of Kano State and another eight years as Governor provided him with firsthand experience in managing one of Nigeria’s most politically significant and populous states. During his tenure, infrastructure development, healthcare expansion, educational investments and continuity in governance became defining features of his administration.

Perhaps one of his most notable leadership qualities has been his belief that government is a continuum. Rather than abandoning projects initiated by previous administrations, his government completed many inherited projects while initiating new ones. In governance, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating,” and leadership is often measured not by promises but by completed results.

His transition to national politics as the immediate past National Chairman of the APC further demonstrated his capacity to manage complex political interests. Leading Nigeria’s ruling party required negotiation, consensus-building, strategic planning and crisis management at a period of intense political realignment.

Political observers have often described Ganduje as a patient strategist. Rather than reacting impulsively to every political development, he has generally preferred consultation and calculated decision-making. In politics, as in administration, “measure twice, cut once” often produces better outcomes than acting in haste.

Today, as Chairperson of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), he continues to contribute to national governance, bringing decades of administrative experience to yet another strategic institution.

Public service ultimately rewards competence, continuity and institutional memory. Political offices may change hands, but experience remains a national asset. As another popular saying reminds us, “old keys often open difficult doors.”

The Ganduje case therefore goes beyond politics. It highlights the enduring value of institutional knowledge, administrative competence and leadership shaped over decades of public service. In an era where experience sometimes competes with political expediency, his career offers a reminder that lasting leadership is built over time, not overnight.
