Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to defect from the African Democratic Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, following what sources described as a unanimous endorsement by stakeholders within the Kwankwasiyya movement.
The development was disclosed by the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Mohammed, who revealed that discussions with the NDC are nearing completion, with only minor issues left unresolved.
According to him, Kwankwaso, alongside Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party Nigeria, and other political figures, are expected to formally join the NDC early next week.
“I believe he, Peter Obi, and some others will be joining the NDC,” Mohammed said, noting that stakeholders from all 44 local government areas of Kano State met at Kwankwaso’s residence to deliberate before reaching a unanimous decision.

He added that the lingering leadership crisis within the ADC played a major role in the decision, describing the party’s internal situation as uncertain and potentially prolonged due to ongoing legal battles.
The Supreme Court had recently set aside a previous status quo order in the ADC leadership dispute and referred the matter back to the Federal High Court for determination, a development Mohammed said heightened concerns among party stakeholders.
“If you look at the case referred back to the lower court, it might take time, and there could even be another appeal. It does not look feasible to remain there,” he said.
He further disclosed that although both the NDC and the Peoples Redemption Party were considered as alternative platforms, stakeholders eventually settled for the NDC, citing its relatively stable structure.
Mohammed also pointed to the approaching deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for submission of party membership registers as a key factor influencing the move.
Meanwhile, report says that the development could significantly reshape opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly if the anticipated alliance between Kwankwaso and Obi materialises under a common platform.
