A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) violated the rights of two former female corps members by denying them the option to wear skirts during their service year, despite their religious beliefs. Justice Hauwa Yilwa, who delivered the judgment on June 13, 2025, held that NYSC’s insistence on trousers as the only acceptable uniform for female corps members breached their constitutional rights to freedom of religion and protection from degrading treatment. The judgement was obtained by the media over a month after its delivery. The case was filed by Miss Ogunjobi Blessing and Miss Ayuba Vivian in two separate suits—FHC/ABJ/CS/989/2020 and FHC/ABJ/CS/988/2020—which were later consolidated by the court due to their shared legal grounds. Read Also: FG Launches N10m Support Fund for Tertiary Institution Staff The plaintiffs argued that being compelled to wear trousers contravened their Christian faith, citing Deuteronomy 22:5, which they interpret as a prohibition against women wearing men’s clothing. They asked the court to affirm their right to wear skirts during NYSC service and to compel the scheme to accommodate such religious expressions. They also alleged harassment and humiliation by NYSC officials for refusing to comply with the uniform directive, which they said infringed upon their rights to dignity and religious freedom. Justice Yilwa granted all their reliefs, declaring that NYSC’s refusal to permit skirts was unconstitutional. She further ordered the scheme to recognise and allow skirt-wearing for female corps members with genuine religious objections. The judge also directed the NYSC to recall the affected applicants and issue their discharge certificates. “The actions of the respondents resulted in the applicants being embarrassed and humiliated. This is a blatant infringement of their fundamental rights,” the judge stated. While each applicant requested ₦10 million in damages, the court awarded ₦500,000 each, describing the amount as appropriate compensation for the violation of their rights. The NYSC and its Director-General were listed as respondents in the case. The ruling is expected to set a significant precedent regarding religious expression within the NYSC programme and could shape future policies on uniform regulations.

The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Senate President, David Mark, has said the longstanding insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment in Northern Nigeria are largely the result of internal leadership failures within the region. He made the observation while presenting a paper titled *“Unity and Social Cohesion as a Panacea to the Challenges Facing Northern Nigeria”* at the 3rd Expanded Meeting of the National Political Consultative Group (North), held at the Abuja Continental Hotel. The meeting, which followed the recent unveiling of the ADC as a fresh opposition platform targeting the 2027 general elections, sought to consolidate Northern political forces under a common agenda and possibly a single political party platform. He pointed to the North’s vast natural and human resources and said the current situation of economic stagnation, insecurity, and disunity was preventable. He identified weak governance, lack of political will, and internal divisions among ethnic and religious groups as critical obstacles that have hindered development. He also noted that the exploitation of identity politics during elections has contributed to deep societal rifts and a loss of collective focus. Mark highlighted the negative impact of insecurity over the past decade, including banditry, terrorism, and communal violence, which have displaced communities, disrupted education, and devastated local economies. Despite its potential, he said Northern Nigeria remains one of the most impoverished and unstable regions in the country. He advocated for a renewed focus on inclusive governance, equitable access to opportunities, and investments in education and social development. According to him, rebuilding the North requires the restoration of traditional structures that once ensured community cohesion and grassroots security. Mark also stressed the need for a culture of tolerance and dialogue over conflict, and called for strategic investments in projects that unify rather than divide. He expressed concern over the widespread apathy and urged Northern stakeholders to recommit to a shared vision based on justice, equity, and mutual respect. The NPCG (North), last held on May 26, continues its efforts to bring together political actors across the region in a bid to build a strong and credible bloc that can influence national direction.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), Major General Folusho Oyinlola, on Friday presided over the decoration ceremony of newly promoted Captains in a colourful event held at the Rhino Officers Mess in Jos, Plateau State. The event brought together senior officers from 3 Division and OPSH, as well as the families, friends, and colleagues of the promoted officers. Your conduct must reflect the highest standards of regimentation and commitment,” the GOC said, while also commending the families of the officers for their support and sacrifices. Speaking on behalf of the decorated officers, Captain Umar Isah expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen OO Oluyede, for approving their promotions. He also thanked the GOC and senior commanders across the division for their mentorship and leadership. “We are honoured by this recognition and pledge our continued loyalty to the Nigerian Army,” Captain Isah said. He also paid tribute to the families of the officers, acknowledging the crucial role they play in supporting military personnel. Among those decorated were Capt. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks, group photographs, and a special presentation to one of the newly promoted officers who is due for redeployment upon completing her posting with OPSH.
