By Abdullahi Hafiz I read with keen interest a press statement issued by Senator Barau I. Jibrin’s media office calling on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf not to politicise the issue of insecurity. The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to refrain from politicising the challenges of insecurity and instead focus on addressing the numerous problems bedevilling the state under his watch. The statement, which is replete with hollow reasons and unsubstantiated claims, has now also exposed the Deputy Senate President’s non-awareness of the true state of politics and politicking and even the welfare of the people he claims to represent — the people of Kano North. Senator Barau’s likeness for attention in Kano has drawn many people into deception, thinking that the senator, who is also the second in command at the legislature, is always trying to prove what is not on ground since his election into the Senate in the year 2015. Yusuf Against Politicising Insecurity, Challenges Kano Govt to Produce Evidence In one way or the other, as a lawmaker and the highest-ranking one for that matter, Senator Barau’s development agenda is only being seen in the pages of newspapers and the digital media. As he mentioned through Ismail Mudassir that the Kano State Government should not play with the issue of insecurity, it left many people wondering and wandering what Senator Barau meant. In a situation whereby the community which Senator Barau came from — the Kano North Senatorial District — is now vulnerable to insurgent attacks as it shares borders with many communities in Katsina that were ravaged by banditry, it is very appalling and takes one to unease. Security, apart from protecting lives and properties, includes ensuring a motorable road for your constituents, which is one of the safest means of security. For example, the Kano–Gwarzo Road was awarded since Senator Barau’s entry into the Senate 10 years ago, and he was instrumental in awarding the contract for the total rehabilitation of the road. Unfortunately, by the time you bypass a section of Kano metropolis after BUK and Janguza Barracks, what you will encounter as a driver up to Kano’s border with Katsina is an unmotorable road linking Kano to Dayi. The road is in total disrepair, and it was Senator Barau who brought the motion for re-awarding the construction of the road since 2015. The question the majority of the constituents are asking is why the road is still in a state of disrepair when most of the federal roads in southern Nigeria were completed. Leaving a major unmotorable road in your constituency, which you brought in 2015, is one of the serious disasters of insecurity, incompetence, and retardation of the progress of Kano, which you accused Governor Abba of. As Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is the Chief Security Officer of the state, and Kano is at his heart. He has not aided any sabotage in undermining the security of the state like the way you were accused of. During the social media popular programme Fashin Baki anchored by Barrister Bulama Bukarti, Abba Hikima, Nasiru Salisu Zango, and Jaafar Jaafar, investigative journalist Jaafar Jaafar accused you of being instrumental in undermining the well-being of Kano and its people. Still, your media office or spokesperson did not offer any rebuttal to that accusation. Are you afraid that journalist Jaafar Jaafar may have cogent reasons for making those allegations against you? “Jaafar Jaafar said a lot of people are pointing accusing fingers at the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, of undermining the security and well-being of Kano, but people should know that Senator Barau is at the forefront.” On the claim by Senator Barau’s media office about providing support to security agencies, Governor Abba, who was mandated by the Constitution of Nigeria to do that, has surpassed you. The main issue some of us from Kano North are daring you to tell us, for our own security of lives and properties, is the issue of Gwarzo Road, which you supervised its reconstruction. But what happened in ten years since you entered the Red Chamber as Chairman and head of an important Committee of Appropriation? Ganduje Describes Call for His Arrest as Baseless, Accuses Kano Govt of Abdicating Responsibility

The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and immediate past Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has dismissed the call for his arrest by the Kano State Government as baseless, reckless, and politically motivated. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Dr. Ganduje said the allegation that he made comments relating to the establishment of a militia group was unfounded and reflected what he described as the desperation and incompetence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration. He argued that the declaration amounted to an abdication of responsibility by a government that has failed to secure the lives and property of citizens. “It is deeply unfortunate that rather than addressing the escalating insecurity ravaging the state, Governor Yusuf has chosen to chase shadows while searching for scapegoats to conceal his glaring failures,” the statement read. “At a time when communities such as Bagwai, Shanono, Tsanyawa, and other affected areas are living in fear, the governor has neither visited nor shown empathy toward the victims.” Read Also: Barau Cautions Gov. The statement further noted that during his eight-year tenure, Ganduje ensured the state remained secure, earning national commendation for maintaining peace and protecting lives and property— a record he said stands in sharp contrast to what he called the current administration’s lack of direction. Ganduje urged Governor Yusuf to focus on his constitutional duty of protecting residents rather than engaging in political theatrics and issuing unfounded allegations. He added that leadership must be demonstrated through purposeful action, responsibility, and compassion— not through press conferences or statements aimed at diverting public attention from governance failures.

Bandits Abduct Two Residents in Kwara

Bandits have abducted no fewer than two residents of the Manba community in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. The incident occurred late Friday after the gunmen reportedly entered the community through the Rogun axis. Sources in the area said that the attackers arrived around 11pm, firing shots into the air and causing residents to scatter. “The gunmen came through Rogun and headed straight into Manba. They operated freely and took two people away,” a community source said, noting that the incident has heightened fear across neighbouring settlements. As at the time this report was filed, security agencies had yet to release an official statement, and the identities of those kidnapped remained unconfirmed. Local residents said the armed group — believed to be bandits — were observed travelling in a long convoy of more than 40 motorcycles, each carrying two to three riders. A resident explained that the alert came from a nearby village that witnessed the movement directly. “We have just received a call from our neighbouring village informing us that the notorious bandits were sighted moving in large numbers, over 40 motorcycles, carrying two to three persons each,” the source said. According to the account, the armed men passed through another settlement without any confrontation before heading toward Lile. “They passed through the neighbouring village and headed directly towards Lile community. Their current location is unknown at this moment,” the source added. Recall that several communities in Kwara have witnessed deadly bandit attack in recent weeks. (Platinum Post)

Barau Cautions Gov. Yusuf Against Politicising Insecurity, Challenges Kano Govt to Produce Evidence

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State against politicising issues of insecurity, urging him instead to focus on tackling the numerous challenges confronting the state. Senator Barau was reacting to allegations by the Kano State Government that his recent comments were capable of undermining ongoing security efforts. The accusation was made at the end of the 34th Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Yusuf. In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President dismissed the claims as false, reckless, and malicious. He insisted that insecurity— including recent bandit incursions into parts of the state — should not be politicised and requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders. According to him, the state government must substantiate its allegations by producing the video clip where he purportedly made statements capable of escalating insecurity. Misgovernance has eroded this standing. We have everything necessary to restore the glorious days of our state, but the governor is not taking steps in that direction,” he added. Highlighting his contributions to improving security, Barau noted that he has donated operational vehicles to police formations across his senatorial district and beyond, provided motorcycles to policemen in Kano North, renovated parts of the state police headquarters, and constructed police stations in various communities. He has also supported the Department of State Services (DSS). Furthermore, he facilitated the establishment of key security training institutions including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Training College in Gwarzo, the Nigeria Police Service Commission Training Institute in Kabo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service Training School in Bichi — all currently under construction. He added that solar-powered streetlights installed across his senatorial district and other parts of the state have strengthened nighttime security operations. “The state government should emulate these efforts rather than casting aspersions on his personality,” the statement said.

Jonathan Questions Legitimacy of Guinea-Bissau ‘Coup’, Demands Release of Election Results

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has questioned the legitimacy of the reported military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, insisting that authorities must release the results of Sunday’s presidential election. Jonathan, who led an international observer mission to the country, became stranded during the unrest but was later evacuated and returned to Nigeria on Thursday. Speaking to journalists on Friday, the former Nigerian president described what he witnessed and cast doubt on whether the events amounted to a real coup. He noted that the situation appeared unusual and inconsistent with known patterns of military takeovers in Africa. It is the president, Umaro Embaló, that announced the coup,” he said. Jonathan explained that before a military officer later addressed the world claiming control, President Embaló had already declared himself arrested and announced a coup — while still using his phone to speak with international media. He said such conduct was inconsistent with how heads of state are typically handled during coups, recalling his experience as a mediator in Mali during a real military takeover. “My conviction is that ECOWAS and the African Union must announce the results. They have the results because officials were in all nine regions when the votes were collated. They cannot change those results. They must tally them and let the world know who won that election,” he stated. Jonathan revealed that the results from all regions had been compiled and were awaiting formal declaration when Embaló abruptly announced a coup. He also expressed disappointment that Embaló — a former ECOWAS chairman and retired military officer — would be associated with an incident capable of derailing an electoral process he should have been committed to safeguarding. “He should be the person that can prevent any coup in Guinea-Bissau. I don’t expect a coup that would remove him from office,” he added.

Army Promotes 105 Senior Officers to Major General and Brigadier General

The Nigerian Army has approved a major round of senior officers’ promotions, elevating 105 personnel to the ranks of Major General and Brigadier General. In a statement issued on Friday, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, confirmed that the promotions were ratified by the Army Council on Thursday, November 27, 2025. Jos Muslims Say Over 4,700 Members Killed Since 2001 Crises

The Muslim community in Jos, Plateau State, has claimed that more than 4,700 of its members have been killed in violent crises in the state from 2001 to date. The Jasawa Community Development Association (JCDA) made the disclosure during a prayer session held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Jos Central Mosque. The group said the figures counter the widely held perception that only Christians have suffered targeted killings in the state, insisting that Muslims have also been major victims of repeated violence. Speaking at the session marking the 17th commemoration prayers for victims of the crises, the National President of JCDA, Yawale Muhammad, said the association has kept detailed records of Muslim casualties from the various conflicts in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, and other years. According to him, the documented number of Muslims killed since 2001 stands at over 4,700. Muhammad described the 2008 crisis as the most devastating, noting that hundreds of Muslims were killed during the violence that erupted after the local government elections in Jos North. “The Muslim community is gathered today to mark the 17th commemoration of the killing of our brothers and sisters since 2001 to date,” he said. It is a date that subsumes many other painful days in which unfortunate crises befell us. It is a day for sober reflection, mourning, truth-telling, prayer, and renewed resolve,” Muhammad added. Giving a breakdown of the figures, the JCDA President said more than 700 Muslims were killed in the 2001 crisis, while hundreds more were killed in the 2002 Eto Baba violence in Jos. He added: “You will recall that in 2004 during the Yelwa-Shendam crisis, at least 700 Muslims were slaughtered. “In 2008, the post-election unrest in Jos resulted in over 1,000 Muslim deaths, followed by the 2010 multi-location attacks in Dutse Uku, Gero, Kuru Jenta, and other areas, where more than 2,000 Muslims were reportedly killed. “In 2011, attacks at the Rukuba Road Eid praying ground left 20 worshippers dead, while the 2021 Rukuba Road incident claimed hundreds of lives among Muslim travellers returning from a condolence visit to Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi. According to our records, we have lost 4,700 people.” Muhammad added that several mass graves exist at Jos Zaria Road Muslim Cemetery, Narkuta Muslim Cemetery, Dadin Kowa Muslim Cemetery, Yelwa-Shendam Muslim Cemetery, and other locations. Also speaking at the prayer session, a community leader, Alhaji Shehu Masalla, described November 28 as a significant day of remembrance for Muslims in Jos. “We remember those who were killed during these crises. We have also lost property worth millions of naira. This day is very important for us,” he said. Malam Hamisu Umaru, who led the prayer session, said the gathering was essential not only to honor the victims but also to seek Allah’s intervention for lasting peace in Plateau State. CDCFIB Announces Date for NSCDC, NIS, Fire Service Screening

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) has announced that the list of candidates shortlisted for physical screening and document verification in its ongoing recruitment exercise will be published from December 1. In a statement issued on Friday, the Board’s Secretary, Abdulmalik Jubril, urged applicants to log on to the recruitment portal, recruitment.cdcfib.gov.ng, between December 1 and 3 to confirm their application status. “Applicants who performed well have been shortlisted on merit and are advised to visit www.recruitment.cdcfib.gov.ng from Monday to Wednesday to select their preferred screening venue and date,” he stated. CP Bakori Deploys More Personnel To Strengthen Security Across Kano

The Kano State Police Command has intensified security operations across the State following a strategic meeting convened by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, sfipma, mnim, mnips, masis, with all operational commanders.
