NNPP Ward Executives Expels Kano Chairman Dungurawa

National Grid Restored After Nationwide Power Collapse

Electricity supply has been restored to Nigeria’s national grid following several hours of nationwide blackout caused by a system collapse recorded on Monday afternoon. Latest data released by the Nigerian National Power Grid at 6:23 p.m. showed that power generation had resumed, with a total load of 505 megawatts distributed across several electricity distribution companies (DisCos). At the time of the update, Ibadan, Ikeja, Enugu, Kaduna, Kano, Eko, Abuja, Jos, Benin, and Yola DisCos were receiving varying levels of electricity supply, while Port Harcourt DisCo remained without power, indicating that restoration efforts were still ongoing. The collapse, which occurred around 2:00 p.m., plunged large parts of the country into darkness as power supply dropped to near zero across most distribution networks. Monday’s incident marks the fourth major national grid collapse recorded in 2025, underscoring persistent challenges within Nigeria’s power transmission system. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that the grid experienced partial disturbances due to lingering effects of the vandalism of the Lagos–Escravos gas pipeline on December 10. The system operator said investigations into the cause and sequence of events leading to the disturbance are ongoing, assuring Nigerians that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence. Power Generation Crashes as National Grid Collapses

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Monday after major power plants lost generation, plunging several parts of the country into darkness. Confirmed reports indicated that the grid went down at about 3:00 p.m., following a sharp drop in power generation across the system. However, the incident occurred amid efforts by the Nigerian Independent System Operator to ramp up power generation after recent gas supply constraints linked to pipeline vandalism. Gunmen Open Fire on Herders Along Bukuru Expressway

Five herders were injured on Sunday evening after gunmen opened fire on them at a Conoil filling station along the Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) confirmed the incident, saying the victims were members of the association. The Plateau State Chairman of MACBAN, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, said the herders were travelling in a J5 open-body vehicle when they were attacked. According to him, the vehicle was carrying eight herders, five of whom sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Also speaking, the Deputy Chairman of Kara Market, Dauda Adam Ciroma, described the attack as deadly, noting that personnel of the Police B Division arrived promptly at the scene. Ciroma said police officers assisted in evacuating the victims to the hospital, adding that some of the injured suffered fractures in addition to bullet wounds. He said three gunmen riding on a motorcycle, who had been trailing the victims, stormed the filling station and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Babayo added that the victims were initially taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital but were later moved to The Potters Specialist Hospital, Jos, due to the ongoing strike at the government hospital. Describing the attack as unprovoked, Babayo said the herders had only stopped at the filling station to buy fuel when they were attacked. “This attack is unprovoked because the herders were just buying fuel. The gunmen specifically targeted them, and this has become a dangerous trend threatening the existence of Fulani herders in the state,” he said. He said the association had called on its members to remain calm, noting that the attacks appeared to be aimed at provoking them. Babayo urged security agencies to investigate the incident and arrest the perpetrators, lamenting that herders no longer feel safe in communities, grazing fields, markets, and other public places. Efforts to obtain reactions from the spokespersons of Operation Enduring Peace and the Plateau State Police Command, Major Samson Zhakom and SP Alabo Alfred respectively, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

Addressing journalists in Kano, Rogo said the meeting brought together NNPP leaders, ward chairmen, and other key stakeholders to review the political situation in Kano State and at the national level. He explained that after extensive deliberations, the stakeholders collectively agreed to appeal to Senator Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf to consider defecting to the APC in the interest of political stability and development. Rogo described Senator Kwankwaso as the undisputed leader of the NNPP in Kano State, noting that the appeal was made out of loyalty, respect, and concern for the future of the state. Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf is reportedly preparing to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that may see his deputy, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, replaced with former APC deputy governorship candidate, Murtala Sule Garo, reports indicate. Political sources said the planned defection, expected in the first week of January 2026, could end Gov. Yusuf’s long-standing political alliance with NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Yusuf is currently the only NNPP governor in the country, and his exit is expected to strip the party of its sole state-level control. Sources revealed that the governor has intensified consultations ahead of the APC congresses scheduled for February, aiming to fully integrate into the party and consolidate his political influence in Kano State. He has reportedly reached out to members of the National Assembly, the Kano State House of Assembly, and local government chairmen to secure widespread backing ahead of the anticipated move. A source familiar with the development said a significant number of NNPP lawmakers in the state assembly, including the Speaker, Yusuf Falgore, have endorsed the governor’s planned defection. “There are strong indications that most NNPP lawmakers in the House are willing to follow the governor,” the source said. While some local government chairmen remain loyal to Kwankwaso, many are expected to align with the governor at the final stage. Following the meeting, lawmakers reportedly resolved to engage the governor further to reach a collective position. However, sources said Gov. Yusuf insisted that his decision to defect was final. Political insiders added that the realignment could affect the position of the deputy governor, with Murtala Sule Garo being considered as a potential replacement to strengthen ties with key APC stakeholders in the state. Sources also revealed that APC governorship candidate in 2023, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, is being considered for the Kano Central Senatorial District ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections. Efforts to get official comments from the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him were not returned at the time of filing this report.
