FG declares Thursday public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, according to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the anniversary, describing the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey and reaffirm commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.

The minister said Nigeria’s warmth, hospitality, human capital, natural resources and diversity remain important national assets, stressing that the country has the potential to remain a source of pride and hope in Africa.

He said peace and stability were necessary conditions for national development and called on Nigerians to emulate the patriotism and commitment to nation-building demonstrated by the country’s founding fathers.

“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.

The minister urged citizens to use the Independence celebration to demonstrate unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, stressing that a new Nigeria is achievable through collective determination and shared responsibility.

He further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government, through President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, remains committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.

Tunji-Ojo said the administration would continue its efforts towards building a better Nigeria as a befitting tribute to the nation’s heroes past.

He wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary celebration.
