Mariya Bunkure calls for greater investment in women’s economic empowerment

Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure has called for greater and sustained investment in women as a critical strategy for driving Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Bunkure made the call while speaking at the Second National Gender Inclusion Conference held at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
She described women as indispensable contributors to national development, noting their roles as entrepreneurs, farmers, professionals, innovators, employers and community leaders.

She, however, noted that women continue to face barriers to access to finance, markets, land, technology, skills and decision-making opportunities.
Bunkure advocated stronger institutions, gender-responsive budgeting, reliable data and effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to address the challenges.
She stressed the need for women to be meaningfully involved in policies and programmes affecting them, emphasising that “nothing about women should be designed without women.”
