President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate, requesting the screening and confirmation of Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro from Plateau State as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The letter, which was read on Wednesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary, was subsequently referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and report. Yilwatda had previously served as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction. It will be recalled that President Tinubu on Tuesday announced the appointment of Dr. Doro as a new minister from Plateau State.

Dr. Doro’s nomination follows the elevation of Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, who was elected National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July. Born on January 23, 1969, in Kwall, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Dr. Doro brings over two decades of experience spanning clinical practice, pharmaceutical management, strategic leadership, and community development in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria. Onanuga said the nominee holds degrees in Pharmacy and Law, an MBA focused on IT-driven business strategy, and a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice. He is also an Independent Prescriber and Advanced Clinical Practitioner with the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), where he has worked across urgent care, walk-in centres, GP practices, and hospital settings. Beyond his professional expertise, Dr. Doro has been active in youth mentorship and social impact initiatives within both the Nigerian diaspora and local communities. If confirmed by the Senate, he will officially join President Tinubu’s cabinet and be sworn in during a Federal Executive Council meeting.

He drew from his personal life to illustrate the importance of religious tolerance, revealing that while he is a Muslim, his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a Christian pastor — a difference that has never caused discord in their home. “I inherited Islam from my family. I didn’t change. But my wife is a pastor. She prays for me. No conflict. I never, at any time, tried to convince or convert her,” he said. Tinubu described his marriage as an example of the unity Nigeria could achieve if citizens chose mutual respect and shared values over religious differences. “I believe in the freedom of religion. We are praying to the same God and are answerable to the same Almighty. What truly matters are our deeds, character, and love for one another — not the method or faith of our being,” the President added. He paid tribute to the late Lydia Yilwatda, describing her as a woman of deep faith, service, and humility, and prayed for her soul’s repose.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has expressed deep shock over the death of Mama Lydia Yilwatda, mother of its National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda. In a statement signed by the Acting Publicity Secretary of the APC in Plateau State, Shittu Bamaiyi, the Party described her passing as not only a personal loss to the National Chairman but also to the entire APC family in Plateau State and Nigeria at large. The statement noted that Mama Lydia’s death was particularly painful and devastating to her children, as it occurred at a time when her counsel and prayers were most needed. Together with her late husband, Reverend Toma Yilwatda, she made immeasurable contributions to strengthening the Church in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, and Plateau States.” The APC added that Mama Lydia left behind an indelible mark through her life of service and the accomplishments of her children. “The consoling record is that the deceased left behind an accomplished legacy, which is manifested in her children,” the statement read. The Party further described her death as a huge loss not only to the Yilwatda family but also to the Church, the Women Fellowship, and Plateau State. While extending its condolences to Professor Yilwatda and his family, the APC prayed for the repose of Mama Lydia’s soul. “While sharing with Professor Yilwatda in this moment of grief, the Party prays God to grant the late Mama’s soul eternal rest,” it stated.
