The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) branch, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest over the Federal Government’s alleged failure to implement a renegotiated agreement and settle outstanding salaries.
Addressing journalists in Kano, the branch vice-chairman, Yusuf Madugu, said the protest was triggered by government inaction despite the conclusion of renegotiations of the 2009 agreement in December 2024 under Malam Yayale Ahmed’s committee.
He explained that part of ASUU’s demands include the signing of the renegotiated agreement, payment of three and a half months’ withheld salaries following the 2022 strike, release of revitalisation funds, salary reviews, allowances, and greater university autonomy.

Madugu added that since former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration approved a N200 billion revitalisation fund to be released in six tranches, only one tranche had been disbursed. He said the funds were crucial to improving laboratories, libraries, classrooms, and the overall learning environment.
The union leader warned that the government would be held responsible for any consequences if the demands remain unmet, noting that ASUU would determine its next steps at a national emergency congress.
The president of the BUK Students Union Government, Abdullahi Usman-Baba, also urged the government to engage ASUU in dialogue, saying students are the worst affected whenever strikes occur.
“When there is a strike, it is the students that suffer most because our academic calendar is disrupted,” he said.
