The Kano State Police Command has confirmed that one person was killed while three others sustained injuries after a man allegedly opened fire during a marriage ceremony, popularly known as a “DJ” event, in Tudun Yola, Kano.

The incident occurred on August 16, according to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, who disclosed the development in a statement.

Haruna-Kiyawa said the police had arrested a 34-year-old suspect, Rabiu Mukhtar, in connection with the shooting.

The police spokesman said officers recovered the firearm from the suspect and rushed the victims to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, for treatment.

He identified the victims as Sadiq Abubakar, Umar Rabiu, Muhammad Sadisu and Aliyu Mustapha.

Haruna-Kiyawa said Aliyu Mustapha later died while receiving treatment at the hospital, while the remaining three victims were responding to treatment.

He added that Mukhtar and another person were arrested and taken to the Police Command Headquarters in Bompai for investigation.

The PPRO said preliminary findings indicated that the incident was triggered by a disagreement over the playing of music at the ceremony.

He further disclosed that the suspect told investigators that he opened fire after receiving information that suspected thugs, locally known as ‘yan daba, were heading towards the venue.

The police said investigation was ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the roles of those arrested.

Haruna-Kiyawa assured that the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion of the investigation.
