How Ganduje’s associate, grandson earned prestigious Jiwa emirate honours

In Northern Nigeria, traditional institutions remain among the most enduring symbols of culture, leadership, and community service. Beyond their ceremonial roles, emirates continue to recognise individuals whose contributions promote development, strengthen social bonds, and advance the welfare of their communities.

Recent honours conferred by the Jiwa Emirate Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on a close associate of former Kano State Governor and immediate past National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairperson of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and his grandson have once again highlighted the significance of traditional recognition and the enduring relationship between respected community figures and traditional institutions.

At the heart of these recognitions is the Jiwa Emirate, one of the most prominent traditional institutions in Abuja, renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, and contributions to peacebuilding and community development within the Federal Capital Territory.

Recognition through community service
Among those recently honoured by the emirate is Alhaji Abubakar Sahabo Bawuro, a respected businessman and longtime associate of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Bawuro was formally turbanned as Dan Malikin Jiwa by the Emir of Jiwa, His Royal Highness Alhaji Idris Musa, during the Jiwa Annual Festival in 2024, a major cultural event that attracts dignitaries, traditional rulers, political leaders, and stakeholders from across the country.

Within the traditional hierarchy of Northern Nigeria, the title of Dan Maliki is associated with distinction, wisdom, counsel, and responsibility. Holders of the title are often regarded as trusted advisers and ambassadors of the royal institution.

Settlers view the honour as recognition of Bawuro’s longstanding relationship with the emirate and his contributions to community development.

One of such contributions is the construction of a modern mosque within the emirate, a project widely regarded as a significant addition to the community’s social and religious infrastructure.

The bond between the Jiwa Emirate and Bawuro was further reinforced on June 19, 2026, after he built mosque which was officially commissioned in a ceremony attended by Dr. Ganduje, and other prominent personalities.

Speaking during the event, the Emir commended the gesture and urged other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate similar initiatives aimed at supporting community development and improving the lives of ordinary citizens.

A grandson’s recognition
In a related development, the Jiwa Emirate Council had earlier conferred the title of Chikasoron Jiwa on Dr. Ganduje’s grandson, Abdullahi Ibrahim Alhassan.

The title, which signifies proximity to the traditional institution and reflects a position of trust within the emirate’s hierarchy, was bestowed in recognition of his contributions to community development, loyalty to the traditional institution, and positive relationship with the people of Jiwa.

According to the official appointment letter issued by the emirate, the honour was conferred in recognition of Alhassan’s commitment to initiatives that promote community growth and strengthen the relationship between traditional institutions and the public.

In recognition of the honour, Dr. Ganduje personally visited the palace to receive the appointment letter on behalf of his grandson, underscoring the importance attached to the recognition by both the family and the emirate.

The Emir subsequently charged the young titleholder to serve as a worthy ambassador of the Jiwa Emirate and the Federal Capital Territory while continuing to contribute positively to society.

The prestige of Jiwa emirate
Beyond the individual honours, the developments have renewed attention on the historical significance and influence of the Jiwa Emirate.

Historical accounts trace the origins of Jiwa to the ancient Zazzau Kingdom, making it one of the oldest traditional settlements within the present-day Federal Capital Territory. The emirate is known for preserving centuries-old traditions, including a royal staff of office believed to be more than five centuries old.

The institution predates the establishment of Abuja as Nigeria’s capital city and remains one of the most respected traditional authorities within the FCT.

Today, Jiwa occupies a strategic position within Abuja, hosting key national assets and infrastructure, including sections of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport corridor, the University of Abuja axis, the Idu Industrial Area, and major commercial centres.

Under the leadership of His Royal Highness Alhaji Idris Musa, who also serves as Chairman of the Abuja Council of Emirs, the emirate has continued to play a pivotal role in promoting peace, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting grassroots development.

Its annual cultural festival has evolved into a significant platform for cultural diplomacy, attracting traditional rulers, government officials, diplomats, development partners, and community leaders from different parts of Nigeria.

Celebrating service and loyalty
For many, the honours bestowed on Alhaji Abubakar Sahabo Bawuro and Abdullahi Ibrahim Alhassan reflect the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in recognising service, rewarding loyalty, and encouraging meaningful contributions to community development.

As traditional institutions continue to adapt to contemporary realities, the Jiwa Emirate remains an example of how cultural heritage can complement modern development efforts, fostering unity, identity, and social progress within the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.

The recognition of both a longtime associate and a grandson of Dr. Ganduje also illustrates how traditional institutions continue to celebrate individuals whose actions contribute to the advancement of their communities while preserving the values and traditions that define their societies.
