Suspected military helicopter crashes in Ondo, personnel feared dead

A suspected military helicopter has crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with personnel on board feared dead.

The helicopter reportedly crashed on Monday morning in a swampy area opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda, throwing residents of the coastal community into panic.

The identity of the aircraft and the number of people on board had yet to be officially confirmed as of press time, although military gear was reportedly recovered from the crash site.

Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with journalists, saying the helicopter had been burnt beyond recognition.

“We have confirmed that a helicopter crashed in the area, but we cannot ascertain the number of people that were on board yet. Military gear was found at the scene, but the helicopter had burnt to rubble,” Oripelaye said.

Sources said the aircraft came down in the swampy area opposite the Naval Base, while security personnel and relevant authorities moved to secure the scene and assess the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Residents and witnesses reportedly gathered around the area as authorities began their assessment of the crash site.

The helicopter’s origin, destination and exact nature of its mission remained unclear as of press time.

There was also no official statement from the military or other relevant authorities confirming the identity of the aircraft or the status of those who may have been on board.

The number and identities of the occupants remained unconfirmed, with further details expected as authorities continue their assessment of the crash site.
