World Post Day: Postal network eyes new opportunities as NIPOST goes digital
By Umar Idris Shuaibu
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) joins postal administrations worldwide in marking World Post Day 2026, as the agency intensifies efforts to expand beyond traditional mail delivery into logistics, e-commerce, digital services and financial inclusion.
The celebration, held on October 9 under the theme, “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” highlights NIPOST’s plans to reposition post offices nationwide as modern service hubs capable of supporting businesses, improving access to essential services and strengthening economic activities.
In a goodwill message marking the occasion, the Postmaster-General of the Federation, Tola Odeyemi, said the agency was working to modernise its operations and establish itself as critical infrastructure for Nigeria’s increasingly digital economy.
“For many Nigerians, the post office still means letters and stamps,” Odeyemi said, adding that the agency’s future would focus on logistics, e-commerce, digital services and financial inclusion.

She said NIPOST was strengthening its logistics operations, investing in technology and partnering with other organisations to improve the movement of goods across the country.
According to the Postmaster-General, the transformation would also enable post offices to provide access to logistics, government services, digital tools and financial services closer to where Nigerians live.
The initiative could create new opportunities for businesses and traders in Kano, a major commercial centre in northern Nigeria, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), artisans, farmers and online vendors seeking affordable and reliable delivery services.
Odeyemi stressed that local businesses needed dependable logistics partners capable of connecting products to markets across the country, regardless of the distance between producers and customers.
She cited the potential for products made in Aba to reach buyers in Sokoto quickly and safely as an example of the possibilities offered by a more efficient national postal network.
Another major component of NIPOST’s modernisation drive is the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, launched on October 1, 2026.
The system assigns unique geospatial identities to addressable buildings, including homes, businesses and farms, using information linked to states, local government areas, districts and localities.
Managed through NIPOST’s Geographic Information System (GIS) Laboratory, the infrastructure is designed to improve address identification, support emergency response, streamline logistics operations, expand access to credit and strengthen public planning.
For Kano, effective implementation of the system could support more efficient parcel deliveries, improve address verification and help businesses reach customers across the state.
The Postmaster-General also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for the government’s digital development agenda and reforms within NIPOST.
She further urged staff of the postal service to embrace a customer-first approach, stressing the importance of public trust and operational efficiency in delivering improved services.
World Post Day is celebrated annually on October 9 to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.
The UPU provides a framework for international postal cooperation and has helped facilitate the exchange of mail between countries. It became a specialised agency of the United Nations in 1948.
World Post Day was declared at the 1969 UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan, to raise awareness of the importance of postal services to individuals, businesses and national development.
The 2026 theme, “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities,” underscores the potential of an integrated postal system to support trade, create jobs, connect communities and contribute to economic development.
