Shettima, Mariya Mahmoud Join ECOWAS Leaders to Commission New Regional Headquarters

Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima on Thursday represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the formal inauguration of the new headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, describing the edifice as a symbol of renewed commitment to regional integration, peace and shared prosperity.

The ceremony was performed by the Chair of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government and President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, alongside the Nigerian Vice President.

Speaking at the event, Shettima said the new ECOWAS Commission Headquarters represents resilience, renewal and confidence in the future of the West African sub-region.

He stressed the need for member states to move beyond functioning merely as a regional market and instead develop into a regional production hub capable of driving industrialisation, economic growth and sustainable development.

According to the Vice President, the new headquarters should serve as a catalyst for deeper regional cooperation and stronger economic integration among ECOWAS member states.

Also present at the ceremony was the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, who described her participation in the historic event as a great honour and privilege.

She said the inauguration of the new headquarters reflects the collective commitment of West African leaders to strengthening regional institutions, promoting peace, unity and sustainable development across the sub-region.

Dr. Mariya noted that the new ECOWAS Commission Headquarters stands as a symbol of shared vision, stronger regional integration and renewed hope for the people of West Africa.

She commended the leadership of ECOWAS and all stakeholders whose dedication and collaboration made the project a reality.

The minister also expressed optimism that the new headquarters would inspire greater cooperation among member states and contribute significantly to the prosperity, stability and development of the West African region.
