Union Bank Completes Merger with Titan Trust Bank

Union Bank of Nigeria, one of the country’s oldest and most respected financial institutions, has officially completed its merger with Titan Trust Bank Limited, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s banking sector. The announcement followed the final approval of the transaction by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), bringing to a close a process that began in 2021 with the signing of a Share Sale Agreement. In a statement, Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aluko, described the merger as a strategic move to consolidate the bank’s market position and strengthen its service delivery. 15 Drown, 3 Missing as Villagers Flee Bandit Attack in Zamfara

Panic turned to tragedy in Zamfara State on Friday when a canoe overloaded with fleeing villagers capsized in Gummi Local Government Area, killing at least 15 people, while three others are still unaccounted for. Residents of Danmaga, Tungar Maigunya, Nasarawar Kifi, and nearby communities had rushed to escape advancing bandits by crossing a river in the only canoe available. Eyewitnesses said the vessel, meant for 16 passengers, was overcrowded as desperate villagers scrambled to board. Read Also: Zamfara Rep. That was when it overturned,” recalled Malam Bashiru Gago Yan Kifi. Local volunteers recovered 12 bodies on Friday and three more the next day. The victims, including eight women, three infants, and four youths, were buried in a mass grave after funeral prayers. Search efforts are still ongoing for the missing. “This is a double tragedy for us—bandits attacked our homes, and in trying to escape, we lost even more lives,” said Alhaji Muhammadu Chigari, village head of Nasarawar Kifi. Confirming the incident, Zamfara State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa, condoled with the affected families and said the government is taking urgent steps to support the communities.

Professor Ummu Ahmed Jalingo, Northern Nigeria’s first female Professor of Economics, has urged women not to see marriage as a barrier to their ambitions. Speaking in Kano at the Inspiring Leadership Reflection Interactive Series (ILERIS), organised by the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), Prof. Jalingo shared her personal story of getting married at 16 and rising to become a professor after decades of dedication. Sokoto Governor Announces Monthly Stipends for Imams, Mu’azzins, and Jumu’at Mosques

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has unveiled new monthly stipends for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins, along with fresh cash allocations to Jumu’at Mosques across the state. The governor made the announcement on Saturday during the graduation ceremony of 111 Qur’an memorisers at the Sokoto branch of the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation. Aliyu said the initiative was part of his administration’s efforts to promote Islamic scholarship and encourage children to memorise the Qur’an. The governor stressed that religious development holds a central place in his Nine-point Smart Agenda, ranking just after security. He added that encouraging Qur’anic memorisation among children would help raise a generation that upholds Islamic teachings in line with the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Aliyu also directed the school’s management to secure land for a permanent site, pledging state government support for its development. Speaking at the event, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, commended Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi for establishing the foundation and praised scholars in the state for fostering peace and religious growth. Former Sokoto governor, Aliyu Wamakko, represented by Aminu Sufi, urged parents to encourage their children to embrace Qur’anic memorisation. Senator Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Lawal Liman, pledged continued support for the foundation and announced a donation of ₦22 million and food items for the graduands and the school. Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, represented by Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, said the foundation’s expansion into other states aims to provide structured Qur’anic education and curb street begging. During the ceremony, each of the 111 graduating students received ₦20,000 and clothing materials from the Sokoto State Government. The event concluded with Qur’anic recitations and prize presentations.

ICRC Registers Over 284,000 Missing Persons Globally, Raises Concern Over Nigeria

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has registered more than 284,000 missing persons worldwide as a result of disasters and armed conflicts—a figure the organization describes as only a fraction of the actual number of people unaccounted for. According to the ICRC, the figure represents only documented cases within its Family Links Network as of the end of 2024, underscoring the scale of the humanitarian challenge posed by conflicts, disasters, and migration globally. The ICRC identified armed conflicts, disasters, and migration as the main drivers of disappearances across communities worldwide. Benson Lee, Family Links Officer of the ICRC, disclosed this during the commemoration of the 2025 International Day of the Disappeared held in Yola at the weekend, describing the figures as deeply disturbing. Lee revealed that no fewer than 13,595 families are still searching for their loved ones across Nigeria. She added that 59 percent of those missing were minors at the time of their disappearance, while 67 percent of the cases were recorded in Borno State. “Behind each missing person is a family living in anguish and uncertainty, struggling with the pain of not knowing what happened to their loved ones,” she said. Lee explained that the commemoration of the International Day of the Disappeared seeks to promote empathy by highlighting the devastating impact of missing persons on families and communities. Meanwhile, the United Nations, alongside organizations such as the ICRC and the Syrian Network for Human Rights, is working to address the issue through legal commitments, improved search mechanisms, and support for victims and their families.

Former IGP Solomon Arase Reportedly Dies in Abuja

Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase has reportedly passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja. As of press time, there has been no official confirmation from his family or the Nigeria Police Force regarding the development. Arase, who served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, was appointed in April 2015 by then-President Goodluck Jonathan and retired from the Force in 2016. Read Also: PSC Approves Promotion of Senior Police Officers Across Ranks Following his retirement, he continued to take on national assignments, most notably as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), a position he assumed in January 2023 under President Muhammadu Buhari. He was relieved of the role in June 2024 by President Bola Tinubu. A seasoned intelligence officer, Arase once headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the apex intelligence unit of the Force. He also served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and later as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence. His distinguished career also included international service in Namibia on a United Nations peacekeeping mission.

CAC Defers Implementation of Revised Service Fees to October 1st

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has once again shifted the implementation date of its revised service fees to October 1, 2025. The announcement was contained in a public notice uploaded on the Commission’s official X account Saturday night. The statement reads: “The Corporate Affairs Commission wishes to notify its esteemed customers and other stakeholders that, in demonstration of its unwavering commitment to service excellence, it has resolved to prioritise the full stabilization of the new Company Registration Portal before the middle of September, 2025. The new fees will now come into effect on 1st October, 2025. “This decision reflects the Commission’s strong determination to ensure that the transition into the new regime of services is seamless, efficient, and beneficial to all. “The Commission sincerely appreciates the patience, understanding and cooperation of our customers and other stakeholders during this critical phase of transformation. “We remain fully committed to building an intelligent, customer-centric Registry that meets global standards.” Recall that the Commission had earlier postponed the implementation, which was initially scheduled to commence on August 1, to September 1, to allow for a smoother transition into its new company registration portal.

ICPC, EFCC Probe Kano Governor’s Aide Over Alleged ₦6.5bn Fraud

Some bureau de change (BDC) operators have implicated Abdullahi Rogo, Director-General of Protocol to the Kano State Governor, in a multi-billion-naira corruption scandal now under investigation by Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Premium Times reports. According to the newspaper, the operators, in statements to the two anti-graft agencies, detailed how they moved huge sums of public funds at Mr. Rogo’s request—transactions investigators say form the backbone of a suspected ₦6.5 billion fraud and money laundering scheme. Investigators allege that Mr. Rogo masterminded the diversion of billions of naira belonging to the Kano State Government, funnelling the funds through bureau de change operators, shell companies, and personal accounts. Read Also: APC Chieftain Urges Kano Govt to Allow Court Decide N6.5bn Diversion Case One operator, Gali Muhammad, told investigators that Mr. Rogo personally contacted him to source dollars. Another, Nasiru Adamu—managing director of Kazo Nazo and Namu Nakune—said that on November 9, 2023, his companies received ₦1.17 billion directly from Kano State’s Federation Account Allocation. He said he handed the dollar equivalent to Mr. Muhammad, who then delivered the cash to Mr. Rogo at the Kano Liaison Office in Asokoro, Abuja. Mr. Muhammad corroborated the account, saying he personally delivered $1 million in cash to the governor’s aide—a transaction investigators described as a “blatant disregard” of Nigeria’s Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. The probe has also roped in the then Kano State Accountant General, Abdussalam Abdulkadir, who allegedly facilitated payments with forged “letters of authority” from two oil companies. Executives of those firms later told the ICPC the contracts were fictitious and signed under Mr. Abdulkadir’s instructions. Investigators concluded that he conspired with Mr. Rogo to launder public funds through the BDC operators. The agencies say they have traced a financial chain linking Mr. Rogo directly to intermediaries who supplied him with dollars. On February 14, 2025, the ICPC formally invited him for questioning on allegations of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. His lawyers sought a rescheduling, but two days later, he filed a court application challenging the summons. Despite this, the ICPC pressed ahead, securing a court order in May for the forfeiture of ₦142 million traced to him. With no one coming forward to claim ownership, the court ordered a final forfeiture in July, ruling that the money was proceeds of corruption. So far, the ICPC has recovered ₦1.3 billion linked to Mr. Rogo, including funds traced to front companies and his personal accounts. Investigators allege he used firms such as H&M Nigeria Limited, A.Y. Maikifi Petroleum, Ammas Oil and Gas Limited, and AH Bello Business Solutions Ltd. to move funds. One account at Alternative Bank reportedly handled ₦3.07 billion in inflows and ₦2.6 billion in outflows in six months. Other accounts in his name at Zenith Bank reportedly recorded billions of naira in credits and debits, with balances now frozen under Post-No-Debit restrictions. Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has defended its aide, dismissing reports of a ₦6.5 billion diversion as “falsehoods” sponsored by political opponents bent on discrediting Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration. The government said all state financial transactions were budgeted and accounted for, explaining that the Directorate of Protocol is responsible for logistics, welfare, accommodation, and travel arrangements for the governor, as well as hosting dignitaries. It also argued that the accounting practices in question are common across Nigerian states and the federal government. Despite this defence, EFCC and ICPC investigators insist their findings point to one of the most brazen diversions of public funds in Kano’s recent history. They suggest that more revelations may emerge in the coming weeks as the probe deepens.

Kano Govt Rates Sanitation Exercise Satisfactory, Hails Jakara-Kwanar Goda’s Efforts

The month-end sanitation exercise held today across Kano State was rated satisfactory, with special commendation given to the Jakara-Kwanar Goda community for its outstanding participation. This was conveyed in a statement signed by Maryam Abdulqadir, Sit-in Director, Public Enlightenment, Ministry of Environment, after the exercise was monitored across the state. The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Sanitation, Engr. Abdullahi Shehu Bichi, led the monitoring team across several locations, including Iyaka Road, State Road to Ahmadu Bello Way, Murtala Muhammad Way to Bata Junction, Igbo Road to France Road, Jakara-Kwanar Goda, Mandawari Abdullahi Wase Road, and Emir’s Palace Road to State Road. Read Also: Kano Cracks Down on Unsafe Handling of Hospital Wastes Among all the communities visited, Jakara-Kwanar Goda stood out by mobilising residents in large numbers, particularly in clearing drainages and ensuring a clean environment. Engr. Bichi expressed satisfaction with the overall conduct of the exercise, noting that only a few cases of movement restriction violations were recorded. Speaking to journalists, the Vice Chairman of Dubai Market, Tudun-Nufawa Ward, Lawan Abdulkadir Musa, said the community deliberately took advantage of the restriction period to mobilise residents in cleaning their surroundings for the benefit of both the community and the state. The monitoring team included members of the Sanitation Committees, security agencies, the Mobile Sanitation Court, journalists, and other stakeholders.
