The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the opening of its online portal for the recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), following President Bola Tinubu’s approval to strengthen community policing and enhance national security. In a statement issued on Thursday, the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the Commission, Torty Njoku Kalu, said the recruitment portal will open on Monday, 15 December 2025, and close on Sunday, 25 January 2026. Eligible Nigerians are expected to submit their applications within the six-week window. Kalu assured that the exercise will be conducted in a “transparent, merit-based and credible manner,” stressing that the application is free and no payment will be required at any stage of the process. He also warned applicants to beware of fraudsters posing as recruitment agents. According to the PSC, the recruitment covers both General Duty and Specialist cadres. For General Duty applicants, candidates must possess at least five credits in GCE O’Level, SSCE, NECO or their equivalents, including English and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings. The eligibility criteria further require all applicants to be Nigerian citizens by birth. The age limits are set at 18–25 years for General Duty and 18–28 years for Specialist positions. Candidates must be medically, physically and psychologically fit. In addition, General Duty applicants must not be less than 1.67m (male)and 1.64m (female) in height. The Commission said detailed guidelines and additional requirements would be published on the official recruitment portal, as well as on the social media platforms of the PSC and the Nigeria Police Force once the portal becomes active. The PSC encouraged qualified Nigerians to apply, noting that the recruitment drive is part of the federal government’s effort to expand police manpower and strengthen security across communities nationwide.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to ministers and other senior government officials, directing that the personnel be redeployed to core policing duties across the country. The directive was issued on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the President emphasized the urgent need to strengthen national security by optimizing the deployment of law enforcement officers. Tinubu said he would rather see police officers performing essential security responsibilities than serving as personal escorts to VIPs. “I would rather offer police officers from the VIP Protection or Very Very Important Persons Unit to perform real policing duties,” he stated. “I honestly believe in what I have said, and I call on the Inspector-General of Police—and I hope the Minister for Police Affairs is here—to take note.” The President explained that the decision was aimed at ensuring that the nation’s security resources were used more efficiently and that policing efforts remained focused on emerging threats. We need all the forces that we can deploy,” he said. “I know some of our people are exposed, and we must make exceptional provisions for them. The Civil Defence officers are equally armed, and I want the NSA to take it very seriously, even to the point of arming our forest guards.” The President further tasked the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by the Vice President, to fast-track the livestock reform initiative as part of efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders. “Especially on livestock reform, I think the Vice President should get NEC to identify which villages or grazing reserves can be salvaged or rehabilitated into ranches,” he said. “We must eliminate the possibility of conflict and turn livestock reform into an economically viable development.” Tinubu emphasised that the reform must operate within the constitutional boundaries of state-controlled land. “Whichever land they can salvage, convert it to livestock villages or other viable ventures,” he said. “Let us stop these conflict areas and turn them into economic opportunities and prosperity.”
