Residents of Kiru Local Government Area, commercial drivers, traders and other road users have expressed concern over the prolonged delay in the completion of the Kiru–Yako road project, describing the situation as a major source of hardship, economic losses and safety risks.
Findings revealed that the road project, which commenced several years ago, remains incomplete, with construction activities appearing to have stalled. The situation has left motorists and residents struggling with deteriorating road conditions, particularly during the rainy season.
Many road users say the condition of the road has significantly increased travel time and transportation costs while exposing commuters to accidents and other dangers.
Speaking on the development, a commercial driver, Malam Abdullahi Kiru, said motorists are forced to drive cautiously due to numerous potholes, erosion channels and damaged sections along the route.

“The poor condition of this road has created serious difficulties for drivers and passengers. We have to move slowly to avoid accidents and protect lives. The road is filled with dangerous spots that make travelling stressful and costly,” he said.
He further disclosed that a major bridge linking Kiru and Yako communities was demolished as part of the rehabilitation project but has yet to be reconstructed.
According to him, the unfinished bridge has compelled motorists to rely on alternative routes, including the old Alhazawa road, to avoid the risks associated with the abandoned section of the project.
“The bridge was removed during the construction process, but the work was never completed. We now have to use longer routes to reach our destinations,” he added.
Another resident and trader, Malam Sani Tijjani, said the situation has adversely affected commercial activities and the movement of goods within the area.
“The condition of the Kiru–Yako road poses a serious threat to lives and property. Businesses are suffering because transportation has become more difficult and expensive. We are appealing to the Kano State Government to urgently address the situation,” he said.
Further findings by ‘The Historica Nigeria‘ indicate that many drivers avoid the road during heavy rainfall due to concerns over accessibility and safety, particularly around the unfinished bridge section.
Residents noted that the project was expected to improve transportation, facilitate economic activities and enhance connectivity between communities in the area. However, the prolonged delay has left many questioning when the project will be completed.
They therefore called on the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to expedite work on the road and bridge, stressing that timely completion of the project would ease transportation challenges, boost trade and improve the safety of residents and commuters.
As the rainy season intensifies, residents say urgent intervention has become necessary to prevent further hardship and reduce the risks faced daily by road users along the Kiru–Yako corridor.
