The Kano State Special Task Force Committee on Illegal Structures has sealed and cancelled the construction of an illegal storey containing shops complex at Line Plaza, Kantin Kwari Market, with plans underway for its demolition.
The Chairman of the Committee and Director-General of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the site.
According to him, the building project contravene approved building regulations and urban planning standards in the state.
“We have sealed the site, cancelled the project, and the structure will be demolished because it violates the approved building plan and development regulations,” Dr. Sani stated.

He reiterated the commitment of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to safeguarding the lives and property of residents through strict enforcement of building and urban planning laws.
Dr. Sani further revealed that the government would identify and apprehend the owner of the structure, as well as any individuals or officials found to have aided the illegal development.
“Anyone found to have conspired in the approval or execution of this illegal project, whether from a government agency or the private sector, will face the full weight of the law,” he warned.
The committee chairman noted that Kantin Kwari Market, one of West Africa’s largest commercial hubs, attracts traders and customers from across Nigeria and neighbouring African countries and therefore deserves a safe, orderly and well-planned environment.
He stressed that unchecked illegal developments could pose serious risks, including obstruction of access routes and increased vulnerability to fire outbreaks and other emergencies.
Dr. Sani emphasized that the committee would not relent in its efforts to eliminate illegal structures across the state and prosecute all those involved in violating planning regulations.
He also appealed to members of the public to support the government’s enforcement drive by providing useful information on illegal developments, particularly structures erected on waterways, road setbacks, public spaces, and other areas designated as restricted under the law.
The Kano State Government has consistently maintained that compliance with building regulations is essential to ensuring public safety, sustainable urban development, and environmental protection.
