Former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Lamido made the announcement on Monday in a post shared on his verified Facebook page, revealing that he would visit the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, to obtain the nomination form. “By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the National Headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of the National Chairman of the Party,” Lamido stated. BIKOBA Commiserates with Jigawa Judiciary over Death of Kadi Bashir Birnin-Kudu

The Birnin-Kudu Old Boys Association (BIKOBA) has commiserated with the Jigawa State Judiciary, the family of the late Kadi Bashir Birnin-Kudu, and the people of the state over his passing, describing him as a pillar of Islamic legal education and justice administration. In a condolence message issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the association, Mahmud Ibrahim Kwari, the BIKOBA President, Alhaji Ja’afar Usman Muhammad (Turakin Gaya), said the late Kadi Bashir’s lifetime was devoted to promoting Islamic legal scholarship and fostering the principles of justice in both Kano and Jigawa States. According to the BIKOBA President, the late Kadi Bashir played a foundational role in training and mentoring generations of legal professionals and scholars, many of whom now serve across the judiciary and academic institutions in Nigeria. He further described the deceased as a unifying figure and a spiritual leader who promoted faith and harmony within the Muslim community through his service as Chief Imam of the Dutse Central Mosque and Chairman of the Jigawa State Council of Ulama. “Late Kadi Bashir Birnin-Kudu’s contributions to the Sharia legal system and his dedication to justice will remain indelible in the hearts of all who knew him,” Alhaji Ja’afar said. He prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the deceased Aljannatul Firdausi and comfort his immediate family, particularly his elder brother, Malam Sale Ahmed Birnin-Kudu, as well as the Jigawa judiciary and the people of the state over the irreparable loss.

A grand reception has been held in honour of Dr. Muhammad Yusha’u Gwaram, former Provost of the Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology, Kano, in recognition of his outstanding service, humility, and contributions to education and community development. The political scene in Jigawa State is witnessing a major shift, with Governor Umar Namadi now openly showing support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term bid after months of silence. For months, Namadi had anchored his citizens’ engagement programmes strictly on state-level issues — service delivery, local governance, and development — without a direct mention of the president. This approach had sparked speculations over Jigawa’s loyalty within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially as other northern states openly identified with Tinubu. But the tide changed after loyalists of former governor and current Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, began staging events across the state to mobilise for Tinubu’s 2027 ambition. The gatherings, held in different communities, carried strong pro-Tinubu messages that many observers interpreted as a subtle challenge to Namadi’s political positioning. Both Namadi and Badaru are competing to show who is more loyal to Tinubu, and in the end, that competition strengthens Tinubu’s base in the state.” However, some political watchers warn that the sudden chorus of loyalty may be more about political expediency than genuine conviction. Ignoring Tinubu, they argue, could prove risky for Namadi at the national level, while embracing him ensures his relevance in both state and federal politics. For now, the message from Jigawa APC is clear: rather than fracture Tinubu’s chances, the party’s internal contest is turning into a stronger push for the president’s second term bid.

Jigawa Political Icon Felicitates Muslims on Eid-ul-Maulud

A prominent political figure in Jigawa State, Hon. Najash Abdulhamid Babura, has congratulated the Muslim Ummah in the state and across the world on the occasion of this year’s Eid-ul-Maulud, marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In a goodwill message issued on Thursday, Babura described the day as one of great blessing, reminding Muslims of the mercy Allah bestowed upon the universe through the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, has congratulated the government and people of the state on the occasion of its 34th anniversary, following its creation from the old Kano State in 1991. In a statement signed by the Acting Secretary of the Council, Comrade Aminu Umar Shuwajo, the NUJ, under the leadership of Chairman Comrade Isma’il Ibrahim Dutse, acknowledged the contributions of past military and civilian administrations to the socio-economic development of the state over the last three decades. The Council particularly commended the administration of Governor Malam Umar Namadi, FCA, for initiating impactful policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare and livelihoods of Jigawa citizens. Jigawa, HJRBDA Partner to Tackle Flooding, Boost Irrigation

Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi has pledged stronger collaboration with the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA) to curb seasonal flooding and open up thousands of hectares for irrigation farming. Speaking at the Government House in Dutse on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by HJRBDA’s Managing Director, Engr. Rabi’u Suleiman Bichi, the governor said the Hadejia Valley alone holds vast agricultural potential of 24,000 hectares in total, with only 6,000 developed so far. “With the remaining 18,000 hectares brought into full cultivation, the volume of land going into production will be remarkable. This will transform livelihoods across our communities,” Namadi said. Read Also: FG to Establish Cattle Breeding Centres Across Six Geopolitical Zones He revealed that discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had already taken place on developing an additional 6,000 hectares through international funding, with a formal request submitted to the Minister of Water Resources. Namadi also outlined a plan to revive 10 abandoned dams, two through the SPIN project, three via ACReSAL, and five directly by the state government. The initiative is expected to add about 4,500 hectares to the state’s irrigated farmland. In addition, he highlighted the success of the Lalashi industrial borehole scheme, which prevented more than 120 households from migrating in search of work. Similar projects, he said, would soon be launched in Gajagarma, Dutse, and four local government areas under Gumel Emirate. On the flood menace, the governor described it as “critical and worrisome,” noting that Jigawa had constructed 120 kilometres of embankments and cleared 70 kilometres of Typha grass to ease water flow. Earlier, Engr. Bichi praised the state government’s support in clearing Typha grass and restoring waterways, which he said had significantly reduced flooding. “The governor’s commitment has been instrumental in restoring our canals and improving water management for the benefit of our farmers,” he said. Bichi disclosed that HJRBDA plans to expand irrigation by 6,500 hectares in Jigawa, with presidential approval already in place for key projects, including the Greater Dutse Water Supply Scheme and repairs to the Hadejia Barrage. He added that farmers currently cultivate 5,440 hectares under the authority’s schemes, producing an estimated 220,000 metric tonnes of crops such as wheat, rice, maize, tomato, and vegetables worth over ₦154.4 billion annually. According to him, the 2025 budget provides more than ₦28 billion for HJRBDA projects in Jigawa, in addition to ₦59 billion already allocated for the Greater Dutse Water Supply, small earth dams, erosion control, and new irrigation initiatives.

Eight Schoolgirls Drown in Jigawa Canoe Mishap

A tragic canoe accident has claimed the lives of eight young girls in Jigawa State after their boat capsized while crossing the Zangwan Maje River in Taura Local Government Area. According to security analyst Zagozola Makama, the incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Saturday as 15 children were traveling from Zangwan Maje to Jijin Gunka. The canoe reportedly overturned due to violent winds and strong river currents fueled by ongoing flooding. Seven were rescued alive, while the bodies of the eight others all girls, were later recovered and handed over to their families,” sources confirmed. The tragic event has been attributed to torrential rainstorms and rising water levels that overwhelmed the vessel. Local divers and community volunteers responded promptly, leading to the successful rescue of the survivors and retrieval of the victims’ remains. Authorities have called on residents to avoid crossing swollen rivers during the rainy season and urged the use of life jackets or alternative, safer modes of transportation. The state government is yet to release an official statement, but condolences continue to pour in for the grieving families.

The Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology (FCAPT), Kano, has reaffirmed its commitment to producing skilled professionals equipped to manage Nigeria’s post-harvest systems in support of food security, job creation, and rural development. This was stated by the Provost of the college, Dr. Muhammad Yusha’u Gwaram, while receiving the newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Board, Hon. Aminu Sani Gumel, during an official visit to the college’s conference hall. Dr. Gwaram noted that FCAPT remains the only institution of its kind in Nigeria and the first in West Africa with a strategic focus on post-harvest technology. Since assuming office in 2020, he said the college has made significant strides in aligning its academic programmes with emerging national needs. In response to the increasing digitalization of agriculture and enterprise, the Provost also disclosed the introduction of ND programmes in Networking and Cloud Computing, and Software and Web Development.
