Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Monday after major power plants lost generation, plunging several parts of the country into darkness.
Confirmed reports indicated that the grid went down at about 3:00 p.m., following a sharp drop in power generation across the system.
Report says that electricity generation, which had peaked at about 4,800 megawatts earlier in the day, crashed to 139 megawatts as of 3:00 p.m.

The cause of the collapse could not be immediately confirmed. However, the incident occurred amid efforts by the Nigerian Independent System Operator to ramp up power generation after recent gas supply constraints linked to pipeline vandalism.
As of the time of filing this report, all 22 power plants connected to the national grid had reportedly lost generation.
