NUJ Kano Holds Capacity-Building Workshop for Journalists as Part of 2025 Press Week

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has organised a one-day capacity-building workshop for its members as part of activities marking the 2025 Press Week.

The training, held at the NUJ Press Centre, forms part of a week-long programme designed to enhance professionalism and strengthen media practice in the state.

In his welcome address, the State Council Chairman, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, said the workshop was aimed at rebuilding members’ capacity, particularly in areas relating to media law, safety, and journalistic ethics. He added that participants were carefully selected from various media organisations across Kano State.

Comrade Dederi urged journalists to apply the knowledge gained for the development of journalism in the state and the country at large. He also expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for its continuous support to the council.

Delivering a paper on *Safety Tips in Journalism*, the Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Governor, Mustafa Muhammad, spoke extensively on how journalists can protect themselves while covering stories in hostile or high-risk environments.

Other resource persons included Adamu Salisu of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Kano Office, who lectured on the *Code of Ethics for Nigerian Journalists*, and veteran broadcaster Amina Yahaya Deen, who presented a session on *Tools for Effective Translation*.

In separate goodwill messages, the Managing Director of Kano State Radio Corporation, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar Rano, and the Managing Director of Hikima Radio, Alhaji Muhammad Musa Muhammad Inya, commended the NUJ for prioritising professional development.

A total of 50 participants drawn from conventional and social media platforms across the state attended the training.
