The Chairman of the Kano Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abubakar Abdulqadir Dangambo, has urged online journalists in the state to remain committed to ethical practice and uphold the principles of professionalism.
Dangambo made the call during a chat with newsmen in Kano on Friday.
He expressed concern over the rising cases of online newspaper editors engaging in blackmail, misinformation, and the use of pseudonyms to malign individuals and institutions. He described the trend as unethical and contrary to the ideals of responsible journalism.
“There is balancing in journalism. You cannot report only one side of a conflicting story; doing so portrays bias. Unfortunately, some people are hiding under the name of Kano to publish unethical and blackmail-driven reports,” he said.

The NUJ Online Chapel chairman noted that journalism remains a pillar of societal development, stressing that progress is only possible when practitioners maintain integrity and sincerity in their work.
Dangambo also appealed to online journalists operating outside the chapel’s membership to regularise their registration. He warned that unprofessional conduct by unregistered practitioners risks tarnishing the reputation of ethical and responsible online journalists in the state.
“These online newspapers know themselves. They should register with us as soon as possible. We will not fold our arms while misconduct continues, and we will soon publish the names of our registered members,” he added.
