By Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has reiterated its readiness to receive Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the party ahead of his planned defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Kano State Party Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, who described the anticipated move as being guided by unity, reconciliation, and the collective interest of Kano State. Abbas stressed that the call for Governor Yusuf to join the APC is not based on political rivalry but on a sincere desire to build a more united and prosperous Kano. He said the party is open to welcoming the governor with respect and goodwill. He explained that upon his formal entry, Governor Yusuf and other NNPP stalwarts, including members of the National Assembly, State Assembly, State Executive Council, local government chairmen, elected councillors, political appointees, and party faithful, would be received into the APC under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. According to Abbas, the reception would take place in an atmosphere of mutual respect and collective responsibility, aimed at strengthening the party and advancing development-driven governance in Kano State. He assured that Governor Yusuf, as a sitting governor, would be accorded due respect and necessary political support to enhance the party’s strength and promote policies that improve the welfare of the people. Abbas called on party members to remain calm, united, and focused, stressing that the APC continues to expand nationwide while consolidating internal cohesion. He expressed confidence that the anticipated defection would strengthen democracy, promote peace, and enhance political stability in Kano State. The chairman further stated that Kano requires unity rather than division, cooperation rather than confrontation, and development rather than political conflict, adding that the APC provides the platform to achieve these goals. Abbas concluded by saying that Governor Yusuf’s defection would boost the party’s chances of victory in the 2027 General Election and position Kano State to deliver a strong vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He described the anticipated defection as a testament to the president’s political strategy and dexterity in attracting opposition figures into the progressive fold, reaffirming the APC’s commitment to unity, progress, and victory.

Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya has emerged as the Acting State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State following the removal of the party’s former state chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa. Abiya’s emergence was endorsed by the NNPP State Executive Committee (EXCO) after an emergency meeting held at the party’s state secretariat in Kano. Announcing the decision, the party’s Assistant Legal Adviser, Barrister Yusuf Mukhtar, said the appointment was made in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution, adding that due process was duly followed. According to party sources, the development followed the submission of a formal resolution by the Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee, recommending the sack and expulsion of Dungurawa from the party. Abdullahi Ali Uban Iya Dawanau, transmitted the resolution earlier forwarded by the Gargari Ward Executive Committee to the state leadership. The resolution was said to have been adopted during the second executive meeting of the Gargari Ward, held two weeks after the general election, where Dungurawa was accused of engaging in anti-party activities. After reviewing the report and the accompanying documents, the State EXCO ratified the decision and subsequently approved Abiya’s appointment as Acting State Chairman. Party officials said the move was aimed at restoring internal discipline, strengthening unity, and repositioning the NNPP ahead of future political engagements in Kano State.  

Speculation continues to mount that Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is considering defecting from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Political activities in the state have intensified as supporters and party loyalists appear divided over the potential move. On Monday, during a press briefing, the NNPP State Chairman, Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, urged party members and supporters to remain loyal to the NNPP and resist any temptation to join the APC. Meanwhile, images have surfaced showing Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, alongside the Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, as potential gubernatorial and deputy candidates for the upcoming 2027 elections. This development indicates that even if Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf defects to another party, these figures could contest on behalf of the NNPP in the next election.

Executive members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Gargari Ward, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State, have sacked and expelled the party’s state chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, from the party. The decision was reached during the ward’s second executive meeting, held two weeks after Dungurawa’s re-election, and was endorsed by 27 ward executives who signed a formal resolution to that effect. The meeting was presided over by the Ward Chairman, Shuaibu Hassan, alongside the ward secretary, Yahaya Saidu Dungurawa. According to the resolution, Dungurawa was removed over allegations of creating divisions within the party, instigating internal crises, failure to pay party dues, and making abusive remarks against the Governor of Kano State. The ward executives described the alleged conduct as unacceptable, stating that it was detrimental to the unity, image, and progress of the NNPP in the state. They said the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, stressing the need to uphold discipline, internal cohesion, and respect for party structures. The ward leadership disclosed that copies of the resolution have been forwarded to the NNPP Local Government, State, and National headquarters for necessary action. The Gargari Ward executives said the action was intended to serve as a deterrent to party members who misuse their positions or act in disregard of party rules. They further reaffirmed their loyalty to the NNPP national leadership under Senator Kwankwaso and pledged continued support for the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, while reiterating their commitment to peace, unity, and the advancement of the party at all levels.
