KHETFUND Conducts Post-Funding Verification of Key Interventions at School of Health Technology Bebeji

The Kano State Health Trust Fund (KHETFUND) delegation has paid a working visit to the School of Health Sciences and Technology, Bebeji, for a post-funding verification of critical interventions aimed at strengthening healthcare service delivery and health education infrastructure across the state. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Fund’s spokesperson, Farouk Isa Musa, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, Dr. Fatima Usman Zahraddeen. The statement noted that the post-funding verification exercise underscores KHETFUND’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ensuring the sustainable impact of funded projects. The key 2025 regular interventions funded by KHETFUND at the school and verified by the team include the procurement of advanced laboratory equipment, repair and rehabilitation of a 36-seater school bus, and financial support for the accreditation of National Diploma and Professional Diploma programmes. She further revealed that the Fund financed the repair of a 36-seater bus for the school at a cost of ₦1.59 million, which was disbursed on April 28, 2025. In addition, KHETFUND released ₦4.17 million on August 15, 2025, as financial support to the school for accreditation of its National Diploma and Professional Diploma programmes — a move that enables compliance with standards set by relevant regulatory bodies. “This verification exercise reflects our dedication not just to funding, but to results. We are proud to see these interventions yielding tangible benefits for our communities. Our mission is to ensure that every naira invested translates into improved health outcomes and institutional growth,” Dr. Zahraddeen stated. She assured residents of the state that KHETFUND will continue to monitor and evaluate its funded projects to guarantee value for money, promote best practices, and ensure sustainable development in line with the policies and programmes of the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. In his remarks, the Principal of the School of Health Technology, Bebeji, Suleiman Abdullahi, appreciated KHETFUND’s interventions, noting that the procured laboratory equipment had been installed and were already in use. He further stated that the repaired school bus is now operational, facilitating safe and timely transportation of students and staff for academic and field activities. He also confirmed that the National Diploma and Professional Diploma programmes have now received full accreditation, thereby broadening access to professional health training in Kano and beyond. Kano Govt Approves N233 Million for Procurement of Laboratory Equipment for DMCSA

As part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery systems across the state, the Kano State Executive Council has approved the sum of N233 million for the procurement of advanced laboratory equipment for the newly remodelled modern Quality Control Laboratory located at the Drug and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA). This strategic investment is aimed at enhancing the agency’s capacity to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of all drugs and medical consumables distributed within Kano State. With the new equipment, DMCSA will be equipped to conduct thorough laboratory analyses and meet both national and international standards in pharmaceutical quality control. This was made known by the Director-General of DMCSA Pharm. Gali Sule while speaking during a Quarterly Review Meeting held Monday at the conference hall of the agency. Kano Health Ministry Hosts iLMD Review Meeting to Strengthen Health Supply Chain Efficiency

In a significant step towards improving access to essential health commodities across Kano State, key stakeholders convened for a high-level Integrated Last-Mile Delivery (iLMD) and Requisition Review Meeting aimed at assessing current supply chain processes and reinforcing collaboration among partners. The meeting, held at Tahir Guest Palace Hotel in Kano, was organized by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Capacity 4 Sustainable Development (C4SD), and it brought together key stakeholders including top officials from the ministry and its relevant agencies, as well as representatives of Essential Drug Officers, MCH Coordinators, representatives of In-state team, Zonal Warehouse Managers, Transborder Logistics, warehouse store officers both at central and zonal levels, some members of the DMCSA fleet unit, and implementing partners. The session focused on evaluating the performance of the last-mile delivery system, validating requisitions from facilities, and identifying bottlenecks in the distribution of commodities. The meeting sets out to provide updates on stock positioning and integrated last-mile delivery activities. It also aims to identify operational gaps and develop practical solutions to ensure effective implementation and to agree on actionable next steps, with clear timelines and designated responsible persons to drive progress. In his opening remarks, the Director Pharmaceutical Services and Chairman State Sustainable Health Commodity Supply System Committee (SHCSS-C) Pharm. Kamilu Mudi Salisu emphasized the importance of an integrated approach to last-mile delivery, noting that “timely access to health commodities is critical to achieving universal health coverage in Kano State.” Calling for proper documentation of all that had been done on supply chain management in the state, the DPS noted that Kano State Government remains committed to strengthening its health supply chain systems in line with national guidelines and global best practices. In his contribution, Dr. Ibrahim Aliyu Muhammad, the Director Public Health and Disease Control at the State Ministry of Health called on participants and other stakeholders to highlight their achievements and successes in supply chain activities through research and the presentation of well-developed conference papers. He further emphasized the need to strengthen existing frameworks to promote transparency and ensure accountability in commodity management. During the meeting, resource persons, including Pharm. Tukur Ibrahim, Director, the Drugs and Supply at Drug and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) and Bello Muhammad Dandago, SSHCSS-C Focal Person at the State Primary Health Care Management Board, made presentations on fleet management operations, requisition management, as well as iLMD activities – family planning and essential medicines. Later the participants have robust discussions on how to reconcile health facility commodity requisitions with actual needs and consumption data, evaluate stock status and delivery timelines, address challenges in logistics coordination and data reporting, and strengthen accountability mechanisms across all levels of the health supply chain. Delivering goodwill messages, the representatives from development partners, such as the Africa Resource Center for Excellence in Supply Chain Management (ARC-ESM), reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the state’s efforts to ensure equitable and efficient distribution of health commodities. On his part, the State Team Lead, C4SD, expressed optimism that the outcomes of the meeting will inform strategic adjustments in supply planning and delivery schedules, as well as guide continuous capacity building for logistics personnel at the Local Government Areas and facility levels. He also assured C4SD’s determination to ensure commodity accountability in line with the state’s accountability framework and work closely with the state’s programs and supply chain leadership to ensure remarkable improvements in the state’s supply chain. ES KHETFUND Visits KSACA for Verification of Paediatric Centre Interventions

The Executive Secretary of the Kano State Health Trust Fund (KHETFUND), Dr. Fatima Usman Zahraddeen has led a delegation Tuesday on a working visit to the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS (KSACA). The purpose of the visit was to conduct a comprehensive assessment and post-funding verification of KHETFUND 2025 regular interventions at KSACA. The interventions include the disbursement of N6.8 million for the variation of the construction of the Paediatric Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Centre , as well as the procurement of furniture worth N5 million for the Center, which is located at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, but under the care of KSACA. The visit is part of the Fund’s due diligence process to ensure transparency, accountability, and alignment with project goals. CSADI Combats Child, Maternal Malnutrition With Local Food Support

The Community Support and Development Initiative (CSADI) has provided nutritional support to 400 pregnant women and children in Kano State as part of efforts to combat malnutrition in rural communities. The distribution, which took place in Rantan village of Bebeji Local Government Area and in Kura Local Government Area, featured the sharing of fortified bul-bul flour — a locally prepared food designed to boost immunity and improve child and maternal nutrition. Speaking during the exercise, CSADI programme officer, Hajiya Hasana, said the initiative was aimed at tackling high rates of child and maternal malnutrition, particularly in rural areas. She explained that beneficiaries were also trained on how to prepare the supplement at home, alongside sensitisation on exclusive breastfeeding, birth spacing, and antenatal care. We teach women how to make it themselves, encourage proper infant feeding practices, and stress the need for pregnant women to attend antenatal checkups,” she noted. Some beneficiaries, mostly rural women with limited access to modern healthcare and nutrition knowledge, also received practical health tips on maternal and child wellbeing. Reacting, the Sarkin Fulani of Bebeji, Adamu Umar Adamu, who also serves as the district head of Bebeji, described the support as timely, especially in the face of rising food insecurity despite the harvest season. “At times, before one child is weaned, another pregnancy follows. In such situations, both mother and child need access to proper nutrition. Heads of households must pay close attention to their families’ welfare,” he said. The traditional ruler commended CSADI for its intervention and urged governments, policymakers, and wealthy individuals to support similar initiatives aimed at improving maternal and child health across Kano State.

FG Approves 7MW Solarization to Cut AKTH’s N200m Monthly Power Bill

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting health institutions and other establishments across the country to enhance public service delivery. Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Hon. Uche Nnaji, stated this on Wednesday during the foundation-laying and handing over ceremony of a 7-megawatt solar energy project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH). Nnaji explained that the initiative, spearheaded by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), was part of efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to provide sustainable power solutions for tertiary health facilities. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, disclosed that the project followed consultations with the hospital’s management over its rising energy costs, which he said exceeded N200 million monthly. He noted that after deliberations with his colleagues in the Senate, they presented the proposal to President Tinubu, who approved the inclusion of the project in the 2025 budget. “The solarization project in AKTH will provide up to 7 megawatts. In addition, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital will get 2 megawatts, while Kano State Nasarawa Teaching Hospital will benefit from 1 megawatt. This is in recognition of Kano’s large population,” Bichi said. He further revealed that the Federal Government had also earmarked N26 billion for the hospital to procure modern medical equipment, including facilities for accident and emergency care, heart surgery, stroke management, radiology, transplants, and family medicine. FG Launches Neonatal Care Programme at AKTH to Support Vulnerable Families

The Federal Government has introduced a neonatal care programme at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), designed to improve healthcare access for newborns, particularly those from low-income and vulnerable households. The initiative, implemented under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), will provide promotive, preventive, and emergency healthcare for children from birth to age five. Speaking at the launch, the NHIA Director of Informal Sector Department, Dr. Salahuddeen Sikiru, said the programme will cover critical neonatal conditions, including prematurity, birth asphyxia, sepsis, jaundice, and sickle cell complications. The Management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has made an urgent appeal to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to reconnect the hospital to electricity supply. This plea comes after KEDCO abruptly disconnected the hospital’s power supply due to pending electricity bills, resulting in the tragic deaths of patients on critical life support equipment. This was conveyed in a statement signed by Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, Head of Information Unit at AKTH, who expressed the hospital management’s sadness over the incident. The hospital regularly settles its electricity bills using internally generated revenue and also procures diesel for on-site power generation to supplement KEDCO’s supply. ICRC, AfDB Unveil Masterplan to Tackle Water Crisis in Maiduguri

Efforts to address Maiduguri’s chronic water shortages received a major boost on Wednesday as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) pledged to support the city’s Urban Water Supply Masterplan. The initiative, formally endorsed by the Borno State Government in 2023, outlines a phased roadmap to rehabilitate and expand Maiduguri’s water system to meet the needs of an estimated 2.5 million residents by 2030. At a high-level roundtable in Abuja, co-convened by the ICRC and AfDB in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and the Borno State Government, about 40 participants — including senior government officials, humanitarian actors, development partners, and technical experts — deliberated on ways to fast-track implementation. The Secretary to the Borno State Government, Malam Bukar Tijani, represented Governor Babagana Zulum at the meeting. Between 2006 and 2021, Maiduguri’s population more than doubled, forcing many households to rely on unsafe and costly private boreholes. Floods in 2024 further exposed the system’s vulnerability to climate change. In response, the ICRC has supported repairs and rehabilitation of boreholes and urban water facilities, improving access for over 150,000 residents. The new masterplan aims to scale these efforts, focusing on sustainability and resilience. AfDB Director General for Nigeria, Dr. Abdul Kamara, underscored the link between water, peace, and development. “Through initiatives like this, we aim to help northern Nigeria move from recurring humanitarian crises to a future of stability, resilience and sustainable development,” he said, noting that the bank has invested more than $805 million in water and sanitation projects across Nigeria over the past decade. At the close of the roundtable, stakeholders issued a joint call for urgent action. The Borno State Government committed to set up a steering committee, mobilize resources, and work with development partners to deliver the masterplan.

AKTH Records High Dialysis Attendance After FG Subsidy Rollout

Renal failure remains one of the most serious health challenges affecting thousands of indigent Nigerians. To cushion the financial burden on patients, the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has rolled out a subsidised dialysis programme, reducing the cost of treatment from ₦50,000–₦60,000 to just ₦12,000 per session. The intervention, which is part of broader health reforms, also includes the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme (NEMSAS), designed to provide free 48-hour emergency services for accident, gunshot, and other critical cases. Read Also: Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Launches Free Emergency Ambulance System During a visit to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Dialysis Centre, kidney patients expressed relief over the subsidy. A patient, Salihu Ahmed Dukawuya, recalled paying between ₦54,000 and ₦60,000 per dialysis session before the intervention. He said the cost later dropped to ₦20,000 and now stands at ₦12,000. Another patient, Auwal Abdullahi Aliyu from Gwale, said the reduction from ₦60,000 to ₦12,000 per session has been life-saving. Halima Abubakar, also undergoing dialysis, confirmed that she previously paid ₦60,000, then ₦55,000, ₦45,000, and ₦20,000, before the current ₦12,000 rate. All three patients appreciated the Federal Government’s intervention but appealed for complete removal of dialysis costs to further ease their burden. Speaking on the intervention, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services at AKTH, Tijjani Rahim, who doubles as Head of the Dialysis Unit, noted that the subsidy has led to a significant increase in patient turnout. He maintained that the unit now attends to 22–25 patients daily, making AKTH one of the first hospitals to benefit from the intervention. Speaking during the launch of the NEMSAS scheme at the hospital, the Chief Medical Director of AKTH, Professor Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, confirmed that the subsidised dialysis programme has already commenced at AKTH. He revealed that the hospital has consumables to cater for 1,000 dialysis patients under the initiative. Professor Sheshe further explained that under the NEMSAS scheme, pregnant women, children, accident victims, and other emergency cases will be transported to hospitals free of charge and given 48 hours of free medical care. However, he appealed for urgent support from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, as well as from philanthropists, to sustain the programme. Recall that on 21st August 2025, the Federal Government approved a new subsidy scheme to reduce the cost of dialysis across 11 federal tertiary health institutions spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
