A fire outbreak has gutted the Girls’ Hostel of Dano Memorial Secondary School, located at Gidan Mission, Gani in Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano State. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Information Officer of Sumaila Local Government, Haruna Gunduwawa, and made available to ‘The Historica Nigeria‘ on Tuesday. The incident occurred last Thursday while students had already vacated the school premises for the end-of-term holiday. The inferno razed the hostel building, destroying nearly all the students’ personal belongings. Fortunately, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported. Read Also: Kano Governor Promises Renovation of Day Science College After Viral Report During an on-site visit to assess the extent of the damage, the Chairman of Sumaila Local Government, Alhaji Farouk Abdu Sumaila, expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the school’s management and the affected students. He described the incident as deeply unfortunate and commended the school’s administration for its swift response. In a show of support, the chairman announced a donation of fifty (50) bags of cement from the local government to aid in the reconstruction of the damaged hostel. He assured the school community of the council’s continued support during this difficult time. The Chairman was conducted around the scene by the School Proprietor, Rev. Alhassan Musa, who confirmed the fire took place shortly after students departed for vacation. He expressed relief that there were no casualties and acknowledged the timely intervention of the local government. Rev. Musa extended his gratitude to the Sumaila Local Government for its concern and generous donation, emphasizing the importance of community support in rebuilding efforts. Efforts are underway to mobilize additional resources to restore the hostel and ensure a safe environment for returning students.

Following a viral video report by journalist and whistleblower Bello Ghaladanchi, popularly known as Dan Bello, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has visited Day Science College in Kano and pledged a comprehensive renovation of the school. The Governor’s visit was confirmed by the school’s Principal, Malam Abba Tukur, who shared the development on his Facebook page. Tukur expressed joy over the Governor’s prompt response, noting that the planned renovation would significantly improve the learning environment and promote science education in the state. He acknowledged that while KASSOSA regularly undertakes renovation projects in science schools across the state as part of their contribution to the development of their alma mater, it remains the primary responsibility of the government to ensure proper maintenance of public schools. Halliru also called on well-meaning residents of Kano to continue raising important issues affecting public infrastructure and education, encouraging civic engagement as a means of prompting timely government intervention.

The Kano State Government has declared Friday, 25th July 2025, as the official commencement date for the third term vacation across all day and boarding public and private primary and post-primary schools in the state. Parents and guardians of students in boarding schools have been advised to arrange for their wards to return home in the early hours of Friday. According to the statement, boarding students are expected to resume on Sunday, 7th September 2025, while day students are to return on Monday, 8th September 2025. The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, urged parents and guardians to ensure total compliance with the approved resumption dates, emphasizing that disciplinary action will be taken against any students who fail to comply. Dr. Makoda also expressed gratitude to parents and the good people of the state for their continued cooperation and support to the Ministry. He wished all pupils and students a successful and hitch-free holiday.

The Senate of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, has approved the reappointment of the institution’s Deputy Vice Chancellors for another two-year term. This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, following the university’s 122nd Senate meeting held on Wednesday, and chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai, congratulated both DVCs, describing their reappointment as a reflection of their dedication and diligence in the discharge of their responsibilities over the past two years. He urged them to continue rendering selfless service toward the growth and development of the university.
