General Christopher Gwabin Musa, former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), stands out as one of Nigeria’s most experienced, calm, and methodical military leaders of the contemporary era. His career—spanning decades of frontline operations, strategic command roles, and national security engagements—has shaped him into a key figure in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency.
Born on December 25, 1967, in Sokoto State, General Musa hails from Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. His educational trajectory reflects his early leadership promise. He attended St. Bartholomew Primary School, Wusasa, Zaria, and Marist Brothers Juniorate, Uturu, Imo State. He proceeded to the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy in 1986 as a member of the 38th Regular Course and was commissioned into the Infantry Corps in September 1991.
General Musa furthered his education with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the Nigerian Defence Academy and a Master’s degree in Military Science from the Bangladesh University of Professionals. His professional development also includes the Senior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College and the National Defence College, Abuja.

Throughout his military career, he served in several commanding and staff capacities that consistently demonstrated his operational brilliance. Notably, he was Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East, where he led joint-service operations against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). His leadership in the theatre was widely acknowledged for improving civil-military relations, stabilising liberated territories, and degrading terrorist capabilities during a critical phase of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts.
Before his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff in June 2023, he served as Commander, Infantry Corps, and had held several key positions including Director of Operations at the Army Headquarters and Chief of Civil-Military Affairs.
As CDS, General Musa championed joint-force synergy, strengthened inter-agency coordination, and enhanced operational readiness across the Armed Forces of Nigeria. His tenure focused on modernising military assets, promoting professionalism, and improving troops’ welfare. He maintained a calm but firm leadership style rooted in discipline, integrity, and national service.
