The government of Benin has announced that an attempted military coup has been foiled, with President Patrice Talon confirmed safe. A group of soldiers, identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation, had taken control of the national television station and announced the removal of the president and dissolution of state institutions.
The soldiers, led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, cited grievances with Talon’s management of the country, including the deteriorating security situation in northern Benin and restrictions on political activity. However, the government has dismissed the uprising as a fringe faction, stating that the regular army is regaining control and the city and country are secure.
