The Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need for stability, unity, and accelerated development in the state.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Director General, Media and Communication, Office of the Governor, Nuhu Salihu Anka, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with political leaders, stakeholders, elders and supporters across the state.
According to the statement, Governor Lawal’s decision came after prolonged internal crises within the PDP at both the national and state levels, which were said to have created uncertainty and distractions capable of affecting governance and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of the state.
The statement added that the governor emphasized that his primary responsibility remains ensuring peace, security and development in Zamfara, noting that aligning with a political platform that guarantees stronger unity and cooperation with the Federal Government became necessary.

It further revealed that the final deliberation leading to the defection took place at the Government House in Gusau, where senior government officials and key political stakeholders met under the coordination of the Deputy Governor before reaching the decision.
Governor Lawal also expressed appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their support over the years, but said prevailing political realities and unresolved challenges within the party made it necessary to take what he described as a bold step in the interest of good governance and the future of the state.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity, improving security and accelerating development in Zamfara State, while calling on citizens and political stakeholders to remain calm and support the transition as the state enters what he described as a new phase of political cooperation and progress.
