Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has reacted to reports of United States-led airstrikes on terrorist targets in Nigeria, cautioning that dropping bombs alone will not end terrorism in the country. In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Friday, Gumi called on the Federal Government to halt all forms of military cooperation with the United States, warning that continued engagement could aggravate Nigeria’s security challenges and undermine its sovereignty. While acknowledging that Islam permits resistance against terrorism, the cleric argued that such efforts must be carried out by what he described as “clean hands.” He questioned the moral authority of the United States to lead counterterrorism efforts, citing its history of military interventions and civilian casualties in different parts of the world. Gumi maintained that Nigeria made a mistake by allowing foreign involvement in its fight against insurgency, insisting that external interventions often come with hidden political interests and result in the loss of innocent lives rather than lasting security solutions. The cleric also expressed concern that US involvement, framed as protection of certain groups, could polarize the nation along religious lines and infringe on Nigeria’s sovereignty. He advised the government to seek military assistance from what he described as more neutral countries if external support becomes necessary. Gumi added that Nigeria has sufficient manpower to confront terrorism internally if there is serious commitment and proper coordination, stressing that sustainable security requires comprehensive ground operations rather than symbolic attacks. His comments come amid ongoing debates over Nigeria’s security partnerships following recent airstrikes reportedly linked to intelligence cooperation between Nigerian authorities and international partners.

FG Explains International Security Collaboration After Terrorist Airstrikes in North West

The Federal Government has confirmed that Nigeria remains engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States, to combat terrorism and violent extremism, following recent airstrikes on terrorist targets in the North West. This was disclosed in a press release issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which explained that the air operations were the outcome of sustained intelligence sharing and strategic coordination between Nigeria and its partners. According to the Ministry, the collaboration has resulted in precision airstrikes against identified terrorist locations in the North West, carried out in line with established international practice and bilateral understandings. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism,” the statement said. The government reiterated that the protection of civilians remains at the core of all counter-terrorism efforts. “Nigeria reiterates that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity,” the Ministry stated. It further stressed that terrorist violence against any group is unacceptable, noting that attacks targeting Christians, Muslims, or any other communities are an affront to Nigeria’s values and international peace and security. The Ministry also disclosed that Nigeria continues to work closely with its partners to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their sources of funding and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen national security and intelligence capacity. The confirmation comes amid reports that the United States plans to provide additional support to northern states to enhance surveillance, security operations, and counter-terrorism efforts following the recent military action. Reports further indicate that the airstrikes followed an order by United States President Donald Trump on Christmas night, authorising military action against ISIS elements operating in North West Nigeria, whom he accused of carrying out deadly attacks against Christian communities. ADA Vows Legal Action Against INEC Over Registration Denial

The All Democratic Alliance (ADA) has announced its decision to take legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the commission’s refusal to register it as a political party, despite, according to the group, meeting all constitutional and administrative requirements. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the association expressed deep disappointment over what it described as an unjust and predetermined decision by INEC. ADA said it was among 172 political associations that applied for registration and was later shortlisted as one of eight groups by the electoral body. According to the statement, INEC, through a letter dated Friday, December 5, 2025, informed the association of its intention to conduct a verification exercise on Monday, December 8, 2025. ADA noted that although the notice was short, its national executive committee members across the country made themselves available for the exercise. The group stated that officials of INEC who conducted the verification exercise commended its level of preparedness and even apologised for the short notice. It added that its national secretariat in Abuja and all 36 state chapters were fully operational and equipped for political activities. ADA further claimed that at no point during the registration or verification process did INEC raise concerns about missing documents or unmet requirements, stressing that all requested information was submitted and acknowledged within the stipulated timeframe. While acknowledging the right of political office holders to seek re-election, ADA argued that such ambitions should be based on performance and not on suppressing opposition or denying new political platforms the opportunity to participate in the democratic process. The association maintained that it would challenge INEC’s decision in a competent court of law, expressing confidence that justice would prevail. It also urged all stakeholders, including electoral authorities and the judiciary, to act patriotically in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy. The statement was signed by Hon. In a congratulatory message, President Tinubu described Dr. Ganduje as an astute politician and accomplished administrator who has devoted over five decades to public service and national development. The President recalled Ganduje’s long career in governance, noting that he served as a senior administrator in the Federal Capital Territory before returning to Kano State to serve as Commissioner for Works during the military era. In a condolence statement issued on Wednesday, the Chapel described their deaths as a painful loss that has cast a dark shadow over Kano State and beyond, noting that the state has lost committed legislators whose voices and dedication to public service contributed significantly to governance and representation. An improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted inside a mosque at Gamboru Main Market in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, exploded on Tuesday evening while worshippers were observing Maghrib prayers at about 6:00 p.m. Sources said the mosque is usually crowded with traders and shoppers who patronise the Gamboru market daily. As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation of casualties, while security agencies were yet to issue a formal statement on the incident. The explosion occurred in Maiduguri, a city that has remained at the centre of the Boko Haram insurgency and attacks by its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), for nearly two decades. The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions across Nigeria’s northeast. A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Ungoggo Local Government Area, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungogo, has died in Kano. The death of the lawmaker was confirmed on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaludeen Sani Shawai, in a statement to journalists. According to Shawai, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Ungoggo developed a sudden illness shortly after arriving at the Assembly earlier in the day. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where medical personnel later confirmed his death. The late lawmaker was said to have passed away in the evening. The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has presented a cheque of N7 million to a former Chairman of Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Hon. Fa’izu Alfindiki, as payment of his outstanding entitlement allegedly withheld by the Kano State Government. According to Senator Barau, the funds represent Alfindiki’s legitimate dues, which he said were deliberately withheld due to the former council chairman’s political stance and decision to stand by the truth and defend the interests of ordinary people. The cheque was handed over on Monday night at Senator Barau’s office in the National Assembly, Abuja, in the presence of stakeholders from Kano State, when Alfindiki paid him a courtesy visit. Senator Barau described the action of withholding the entitlement as unfortunate, unjust and a threat to democratic principles, stressing that no citizen should be punished for exercising freedom of association or expressing political choices. He said such practices undermine freedom of speech and political participation, warning that democracy cannot thrive where individuals are victimised for their beliefs. This gesture has once again confirmed that the APC is a party worth standing with and sacrificing for. I always believed the party would stand by me, and today that belief has been validated,” Alfindiki said. He added that Senator Barau’s support demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to justice, pledging his continued loyalty and service to the party and the people.
