President Bola Tinubu has approved the formation of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate a state burial for former President Muhammadu Buhari. The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja via a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). According to the statement, the SGF, Senator George Akume, will chair the committee. Its mandate is to plan and oversee a befitting burial for the late elder statesman. Also included are the National Security Adviser, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters, the Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), and Chief of Defence Staff. The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, will serve as the committee’s secretariat. President Tinubu also directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers for members of the public. Central registers for the diplomatic corps and wider public will be available at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday. The announcement, made by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, follows the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Tinubu. The government also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians at large.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday paid a condolence visit to Aisha Buhari, widow of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, in London. The Vice President also met with other members of the Buhari family during the visit, offering prayers and support following the former president’s passing. Former President Buhari died on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness. In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed Vice President Shettima to travel to London to condole with the family and accompany the remains back to Nigeria. The burial is slated to take place at 2:00 p.m. the same day in Daura, Buhari’s hometown in Katsina State. Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State disclosed the change in plans, noting that the decision was made following consultations with Buhari’s family and other close associates in London.

The immediate past National Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje described the late President as a disciplined leader, a patriot, and a statesman who dedicated his entire life to the service of Nigeria. He noted that Buhari’s death is a monumental loss not only to his family and the people of Katsina State, but to the entire nation. He extended condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants the late President eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus. Ganduje called on Nigerians to honour the former President’s legacy by upholding the values of patriotism, honesty, and sacrifice that he stood for throughout his life.
