The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, has expressed deep shock and sadness over the sudden death of the FCT Head of Service, Pastor Mrs. Grace Adayilo. In a statement, Dr. Bunkure described Adayilo’s passing as a painful loss not only to the FCT Administration but also to the Nigerian public service and the nation at large. She hailed the late Head of Service as a distinguished administrator, seasoned technocrat, and dedicated public servant who discharged her duties with professionalism, humility, and commitment. EFCC Detains NAHCON Chairman’s Brother, a.k.a Defacto Chairman Sirajo Usman Over N50 Billion Fraud in Hajj Expenditure

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Mr. Sirajo Salisu Usman, brother to the Chairman and CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, popularly known as “Pakistan,” over alleged fraud running into more than N50 billion. Mr. Sirajo, nicknamed “Ka fi Chairman”, loosely translated as “de facto NAHCON Chairman”, was arrested on Wednesday in Abuja and spent the night in EFCC custody, sources confirmed. He currently serves as Deputy Director in the Chairman’s Office and is said to wield enormous influence within the commission. “The chairman’s brother is still in EFCC detention as of 12 p.m. Thursday,” a source at NAHCON told SaharaReporters. Read Also: BBC Hausa Editor Aliyu Tanko Resigns Amid Allegations According to insiders, Mr. Sirajo’s arrest is linked to ongoing investigations into alleged financial mismanagement during the 2025 Hajj, including N25 billion reportedly spent on Masha’ir tents, N1.6 billion on spouses, and N8 billion on unused contingency accommodations in Makkah. On August 19, the EFCC also detained NAHCON’s Commissioner of Policy, Personnel and Finance (PPMF), Aliu Abdulrazak, and the Commissioner of Planning, Research, Statistics, Information, and Library Services (PRSILS), Professor Abubakar A. Yagawal, over similar allegations. Earlier, on August 7, other senior officials including Legal Adviser Barrister Nura Danladi and Deputy Director (Accounts) Abdulmalik Diggi were also questioned. Sources within NAHCON allege that Mr. Sirajo has long acted as the commission’s power broker, often vetting or approving documents on behalf of his elder brother. “Mr. Sirajo is the one making comments on all NAHCON memos. The chairman only signs them. That is why staff are urging EFCC to conduct a forensic review of all approvals,” a senior official alleged. Investigators are reportedly probing questionable expenditures, including N8 billion lost to 6,500 unused contingency bed spaces in Makkah. A confidential NAHCON finance department report also described the agency’s books as reflecting “considerable financial inefficiency.” Despite NAHCON spokesperson Fatima Usara’s claims that the detentions were “routine operations,” EFCC sources insist the probe covers alleged procurement fraud, misappropriation of public funds, and abuse of office. The anti-graft agency has interrogated various NAHCON officials in recent weeks, including coordinators for Makkah and Madinah, aviation officers, and members of the National Medical and clerics’ teams. Meanwhile, stakeholders are demanding a complete overhaul of NAHCON, the recovery of all misappropriated funds, and prosecution of those found culpable. Insider reports suggest the NAHCON Board, in a two-day meeting, accused Professor Usman of multiple breaches, including violating procurement laws, acting as a sole administrator, and ignoring directives from Vice President Kashim Shettima to disengage “pool officers.” Staff members are now threatening protests if these issues remain unresolved.

FCTA Elevates 49 Deputy Directors After First-Ever CBT Promotion Exam

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has promoted 49 deputy directors to the rank of director, moving them from Grade Level 16 to 17. The promotions followed the approval of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who recently authorized the release of results from the administration’s first-ever computer-based promotion examination. The examination, held on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the National Open University Duste-Alhaji Study Centre in Bwari Area Council, was introduced to address a backlog of pending promotions from 2023 to 2025, particularly for officers who had been on Grade Level 16. Of the new directors, the Education Officer cadre recorded the highest number with 20 promotions, followed by the Accountant cadre with nine. Civil Engineer, Social Welfare, Tourism, Fisheries, and Medical Officer cadres each had one vacancy and one eligible officer promoted. By contrast, the Education Officer cadre had 820 eligible officers vying for 20 vacancies, while the Admin cadre had 12 eligible officers for 10 slots. To ensure transparency, the Minister had directed the Civil Service Commission to adopt a computer-based test (CBT) model for the promotion exercise. The Board of Examiners set a minimum pass mark of 60 percent to make the process credible and to reduce delays often associated with the release of results.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that one of its Abuja/Kaduna AKTS train services derailed on Tuesday morning. According to a statement released via its official X handle, the incident occurred at about 11:09 a.m. at KM 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations. “The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirms a train derailment involving our Kaduna-bound AKTS service at about 11:09 a.m. at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station,” the statement read. Efforts were ongoing to evacuate passengers back to Abuja safely. Details regarding the cause of the derailment and the number of passengers affected were yet to be disclosed as of press time.

A passenger train travelling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed on Tuesday morning, causing panic among commuters. The incident, according to Arise Television News, occurred around 11:00 a.m. along the busy Kaduna/Abuja rail corridor. Eyewitnesses reported that some cabins were overturned, forcing passengers to scramble for safety. The Director of Training and Programmes at the Progressive Institute, Sanusi Sa’id Kiru, has advised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to refrain from making public comments on the alleged N6.5 billion diversion involving the Protocol Directorate of Government House. This was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Kano, where Kiru, a former Commissioner of Education in the state, stressed that ongoing litigation should be allowed to run its course without interference. He noted that rather than dismissing the allegations as false, the governor should encourage patience and trust in the judicial process, thereby demonstrating his administration’s commitment to transparency and anti-corruption. Ministry of Livestock Commissions 2,000-Litre Milk Collection Centre in Bauchi

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has commissioned a Milk Collection Centre with a 2,000-litre daily capacity at the Sawi Grazing Reserve in Adamami community of Shira Local Government Area, Bauchi State. The facility, rehabilitated and equipped a few years ago by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under the Livestock Directorate, is now being managed by a private investor, L&Z Integrated Farms. Speaking at the inauguration, Director of Livestock Development in the ministry, Tagwi James, said the choice of the Sawi Grazing Reserve was informed by “the significant milk deposits that could be harnessed daily” from the area. James further urged state governments to complement federal efforts by implementing livestock-related policies and programmes. On his part, Managing Director of L&Z Integrated Farms, Muhammad Damakka Abubakar, stressed the need for Nigeria to scale up its dairy processing and production capacity, warning that the country currently spends about $1.5 billion annually on milk importation. “Improving milk aggregation and collection infrastructure is essential to achieving self-sufficiency in dairy production,” Abubakar said. Similarly, the District Head of Disina, Alhaji Abdullahi Mustapha, hailed the Federal Government for the initiative, saying it would encourage pastoralists to settle in one location, thus enabling their children to attend school. He also commended L&Z Integrated Farms for its role in actualising the project and urged herders to take full advantage of the centre. Chairman of Miyetti Allah, Shira LGA, Umar Muhammad Hassan, described the facility as a welcome development for the Fulani community. “The facility will significantly boost economic growth and livelihoods in the area,” Hassan said, pledging to supply quality milk. He also appealed to the Bauchi State Government to establish a nomadic school in the community to ensure pastoralist children have access to formal education.

APC Demands Cancellation of Kano Bye-Election, Cites Violence and Electoral Disruption

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the ongoing bye-election in Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency and the rerun election in Ghari Constituency, alleging widespread violence and disruption of the electoral process. This was contained in a press statement signed by Felix Morka, CON, the party’s National Publicity Secretary. According to the APC, armed thugs stormed several polling units across Shanono, Bagwai, and Ghari constituencies, unleashing violence that forced voters to flee and overwhelmed security personnel deployed to maintain order. The party warned that continuing with the exercise under such conditions would undermine democratic principles and legitimize malpractice. “Proceeding with the Shanono/Bagwai Kano State Constituency bye-election and Ghari rerun election in the atmosphere of utter brigandage and outright violent voter intimidation will be against democratic dictates of free, fair and peaceful election,” Morka stated. The APC further argued that allowing the elections to continue would set a “dangerous precedent for undesirable and unacceptable electoral heist,” urging INEC to act urgently in the interest of electoral integrity and public safety. As of press time, INEC had not issued a formal response to the APC’s demand. The situation remains tense in the affected constituencies, with observers and civil society groups closely monitoring developments.

NSCDC Deploys 20,850 Personnel for August 16 By-Elections

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, has ordered the deployment of 20,850 officers and men to ensure a hitch-free conduct of the by-elections scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025, in 16 constituencies across 12 states of the federation. This was contained in a statement signed by the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer, CSC Afolabi Babawale, who noted that all State Commandants in the affected states have been adequately briefed with emphasis on professionalism, respect for citizens’ fundamental human rights, and commitment to ensuring peaceful elections. Prof. Audi assured the public of the Corps’ readiness to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, secure election materials, safeguard officials, and monitor the entire election process in synergy with the Nigeria Police, which is the lead agency in election duty operations. NSCDC personnel have been directed to collaborate with other security agencies in Anambra, Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo, Taraba, Kogi, Kano, Niger, and other states where the polls will take place.
