Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has expressed concern over what he described as the deepening political crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria, warning that the situation could undermine the party’s role as the country’s major opposition platform.
Lamido stated this during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at his residence in Kano, convened following growing anxiety among party members over the leadership tussle and internal divisions affecting the PDP at both national and state levels.
He said the meeting was necessary to brief stakeholders on ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis, adding that he had already initiated consultations with PDP governors and the Chairman of the party’s Reconciliation Committee, Dr Bukola Saraki, to explore pathways toward resolving the disagreements among contending factions within the party.
According to him, further meetings have been scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, after which a clearer and more definitive position would emerge. He urged party loyalists to remain patient and avoid actions that could further inflame tensions within the PDP.

Lamido maintained that despite its challenges, the PDP remains the only viable opposition party capable of restoring Nigeria’s political stability, economic growth and security, noting that many Nigerians are increasingly yearning for an alternative capable of addressing the country’s mounting challenges.
He also called on Nigerians to embrace patriotism, dedication and sacrifice, stressing that such values are essential to rebuilding the nation and restoring its lost glory.
Addressing stakeholders from Jigawa State, Lamido assured party members that they would be free to contest for elective positions of their choice under the PDP platform in the 2027 general elections, urging them to take this message to the grassroots.
The former governor expressed concern over what he termed a lack of patriotism among some politicians, accusing them of weakening party politics by abandoning platforms that nurtured them in favour of opportunistic alliances aimed solely at winning elections.
He added that while alliances could be explored if necessary, such decisions would only be considered if circumstances demanded, insisting that the PDP must first exhaust all internal mechanisms to resolve its differences and reposition itself for the future.
