The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to Benin to support the country’s government, which was recently hit by a failed coup attempt. The Senate approved the deployment, citing the need to maintain regional stability and support Benin’s democratic institutions.
President Tinubu had requested the Senate’s consent, citing a request from Benin’s government for assistance in quelling the attempted coup. The deployment is aimed at preventing unnecessary criminality and disruption of property, according to the Senate.

The coup attempt, led by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, was thwarted after Nigerian fighter jets and troops were deployed to Benin. President Patrice Talon’s government has since confirmed that the situation is under control.
