NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Warns of Flash Floods Across Nigeria
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in affected areas.
In its weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet indicated that parts of the northern region including Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Jigawa, Yobe, Zamfara, and Kebbi are likely to experience thunderstorms with moderate rainfall throughout the three-day forecast period.
“Flash floods are likely in parts of Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Bauchi States,” the agency warned, urging authorities and residents to activate emergency response systems.

In the central region, cloudy conditions with light to moderate rainfall are expected in the morning over Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa, with more intense rainfall anticipated later in the day in Kogi, Kwara, and surrounding areas.
Southern states, including Abia, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa, are forecast to witness moderate to heavy rainfall, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours.
For Tuesday and Wednesday, similar weather patterns are expected with a mix of morning thunderstorms and evening rains across the country. Northern states such as Sokoto, Borno, Gombe, and Adamawa are also expected to experience rainfall and thunderstorms.
NiMet advised residents in high-risk areas to avoid driving during heavy downpours and to keep warm, especially at night when temperatures drop. The agency also cautioned against seeking shelter under tall trees and recommended disconnecting electrical appliances during storms.
