Kano Cracks Down on Unsafe Handling of Hospital Wastes
The Kano State Government has issued a stern warning to scavengers and waste recycling plants against handling hospital and other medical wastes, citing health and safety concerns.
The warning was given by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Sanitation, Engr. Abdullahi Shehu Bichi, during an inspection visit to Dakata Small Scale Industrial Area to assess compliance with the month-end sanitation exercise across public and private sectors, industries, and business premises in the state.
Lamenting the industries’ failure to fully implement safety measures, Engr. Bichi reiterated the government’s commitment—through the Ministry of Environment—to provide technical support and guidance that would enable industries to operate safely and sustainably, for their own benefit and that of the state at large.

The inspection committee also extended an invitation to industry leaders for further engagement aimed at improving practices to safeguard lives, property, and the environment in line with sustainable development goals.
Engr. Bichi described the overall exercise as successful, commending the efforts and commitment of the inspection committee.
Meanwhile, arrangements for the residents’ and neighbourhoods’ month-end sanitation exercise have been concluded, with Saturday, August 30, 2025, scheduled for the activity.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, called on the public to give the exercise maximum compliance. He also urged residents to restrict movement between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., warning that the sanitation task force will be fully active and offenders will not be spared.
