Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has inaugurated the second phase of the state’s postgraduate scholarship programme, approving sponsorships for 590 students to pursue advanced degrees in Nigerian and foreign universities.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Wednesday, 350 of the selected scholars will study abroad, while 240 will attend universities within Nigeria. The initiative falls under the 1,001 Postgraduate Foreign and Domestic Scholarship Scheme, a key component of the administration’s education reform agenda.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Kano, Governor Yusuf said the programme — originally introduced by former governor Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso — was revived to equip Kano’s youth with global knowledge and skills needed for development.

He revealed that the first phase of the scheme sponsored 418 students at a cost of ₦5 billion, with many now graduated and some securing jobs internationally.
“This second phase, with 350 foreign and 240 local postgraduate students, reflects our sustained effort to develop a knowledge-driven economy. It is a step toward making Kano a centre of excellence,” the governor said.
Yusuf also urged the beneficiaries to remain disciplined, patriotic, and committed to excellence, noting that their success would reflect positively on both Kano State and Nigeria.
He added that 31% of the state’s 2025 budget was allocated to education — the highest in the state’s history — reaffirming his administration’s prioritisation of human capital development.
