The Federal Government has deployed 240 electric tricycles and 12 solar-powered charging stations to 12 public universities as part of efforts to promote clean energy, innovation and affordable campus transportation.
The Electric Tricycle Deployment Programme, supported by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), was launched on Thursday at Bayero University Kano by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad.
Speaking at the event, Professor Ahmad said the initiative reflects the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Education, under the leadership of the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, to leveraging education for practical solutions to national challenges, particularly in the areas of clean energy and sustainable mobility.
She explained that each participating university would receive 20 electric tricycles, with Students’ Union Governments (SUGs) responsible for managing the fleets to ensure affordable, reliable and student-friendly transportation on campuses.

According to her, the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially in advancing the green economy, promoting innovation and empowering young people.
Professor Ahmad described the project as “Renewed Hope in action,” noting that it would not only ease transportation challenges for students but also contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting smart mobility within university communities.
She commended TETFund and the participating universities for their partnership and support, adding that the initiative underscores the government’s resolve to integrate sustainability and innovation into Nigeria’s education sector.
