District Heads in Katsina to Earn Salaries Equivalent to Grade Level 16 Officers

District heads in Katsina State will now receive salaries equivalent to those of public servants on Grade Level 16, Governor Dikko Umar Radda has announced. Radda disclosed this on Monday while receiving traditional rulers from the Katsina and Daura Emirates at Government House. He said the increment followed a new law recently passed by the State House of Assembly, designed to strengthen the role of traditional institutions in governance and motivate grassroots leaders. Government has also increased the monthly allowance of 6,652 ward heads across the state,” the governor said. Radda further revealed that the state government would extend financial support to clerics and mosque workers. According to him, over 3,000 Imams of Juma’at mosques and their deputies will receive stipends, while mosque sweepers under Izala and Dariga groups will also benefit from allowances. In addition, the governor announced the release of ₦20 million to each of the 34 local government areas for the repair and maintenance of graveyards. He described the gesture as both a service to the people and a spiritual investment for the state. “This is not just governance; it is a way of seeking Allah’s blessings for Katsina,” Radda said. The governor urged traditional and religious leaders to intensify prayers for an end to insecurity, stressing that the fight against banditry and other crimes should not be left to government alone. “The battle against insecurity is a collective responsibility. Every citizen must play a part,” he said. In their separate remarks, the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir, and the Emir of Daura, Faruk Umar, commended the state government’s efforts to restore peace. They were represented by the Wazirin Katsina, Ibrahim Iddah, and the District Head of Baure, Daha Umar, respectively.

Katsina Govt. begins malnutrition risk survey

The Katsina government has begun a panel survey to identify communities hit by malnutrition across the 34 local government areas of the state. The Acting Governor of the state, Faruq Lawal-Jobe, said this at the inauguration of the survey, on Tuesday in Katsina. Lawal-Jobe was represented by Alhaji Bashir Tanimu, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He said the survey would explore prevalence of malnutrition among the under-5 children, and identify household and community level food security status. Read Also: Kano Stakeholders Push for Stronger Financing to Tackle Zero-Dose Children “It will also ascertain communities with incidence of malnutrition, assess household vulnerability to food insecurity, and determine transfer value and minimum expenditure basket of households in Katsina State,” he said. Lawal-Jobe said the state government has procured 400 tractors to support farmers as a long-term intervention in the area of food security. He said the gesture aimed at providing agricultural transformation through mechanised farming and hybrid livestock production. ”The 34 LGAs in the state have also established mechanised centres, and these interventions are expected to double agricultural production by more than four folds, enhance agribusiness and deepen the agricultural value chain. “The state has also consistently since the coming of the administration of Gov. Dikko Radda, provided subsidised fertilisers to farmers in order to ensure bumper harvest. “This assessment will enable us to gather accurate and reliable data, so that we will be able to identify areas of vulnerability and opportunity where our interventions can have the greatest impact,” he said. Lawal-Jobe said the survey would ensure evidence-based policy decisions to address the root cause of food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty, and development targeted interventions to improve nutrition and livelihoods, particularly for the most vulnerable populations. “It will also enable us to monitor progress and evaluate impact ensuring that our efforts are effective and efficient. “The state is not unaware of food insecurity and prevalence for pockets of malnutrition in some communities, as a survey shows global acute malnutrition with a rate peaked at 17.5 per cent in the northern part of the state. “But I have just learned that this rate has dropped to 11.5 per cent . We should be reminded that factors aggravating malnutrition are multifaceted. ”It is pertinent to state here that the state has progressively and steadily increased its matching funds from N200 million in 2023, to N250 million in 2024, and has doubled to N500 million in 2025,” he said. Earlier, Ahmad Filin-Samji, Chairman of the survey team, pledged to discharge their responsibilities deligently. He said the survey was designed as a comprehensive statewide exercise, targeting more than 8,500 households across the 34 LGAs. Filin-Samji said the exercise would be conducted by over 200 trained enumerators, supported by supervisors and data monitors through global standards to ensure accuracy, speed and transparency. The chairman enjoined the enumerators to consider their work as an act of worship, and dedicate themselves to the advancement of humanity. Also, the Statistician General of the state, Prof. Saifullahi Sani, said data collection would help the government to prepare against malnutrition. “I believe the best strategy to address malnutrition is to prevent it, not to allow it to come and be wasting resources to cure it,” he said. Sani commended the stakeholders, and development partners for their support to the state. (NAN)

Tragedy: Woman, Five Children Die as Building Collapses During Downpour

Tragedy struck Dankama town in Katsina State as a mother and her five children lost their lives when their house collapsed during a heavy downpour in the early hours of Tuesday. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. while the family was asleep. According to reports, the building caved in due to the intensity of the rainfall, claiming six lives and leaving others injured. The father of the children, Muhammad Sani, confirmed the heartbreaking incident to journalists in Katsina. He said he was away from home at the time and returned to find the devastating aftermath. Three others are currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” he said. The deceased have been identified as Mariya Sani, 45; Mujahid, 20; Zahariya, 18; Hauwa, 15; Amira, and five-year-old Nura Sani. Muhammad Sani expressed deep sorrow over the loss but said, “I surrender to Allah’s will. May He grant them eternal rest.” The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the incident has thrown the entire community into mourning, with neighbours and relatives trooping to the family house to offer condolences and support. Confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hajiya Binta Dangani, said a team from the agency had visited the affected family to assess the situation and offer immediate assistance.

Katsina Senator Resigns from APC, Joins ADC

A prominent Katsina politician and former federal lawmaker, Senator Abubakar Sadiq Yar’adua, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing frustration with the party’s leadership and the federal government’s alleged failures in governance. In a strongly worded resignation letter dated July 28, 2025, and addressed to his APC Ward Chairman, Senator Yar’adua expressed deep disappointment with the direction of the party and its role in what he described as Nigeria’s deepening socioeconomic crisis. The former lawmaker also recalled his early sacrifices as one of the founding members of both the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and later the APC, which collectively helped to unseat the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2015. “Sadly, those who once stood for change have become worse than the government they replaced. The APC has now turned into a reactionary force, disconnected from the masses,” he said. Yar’adua further accused the current party leadership of inaction in the face of worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and widespread abuses, saying Nigerians continue to suffer while the leadership prioritizes elite interests. Rotary Donates Kits to Pregnant, Nursing Women in Katsina

The Rotary International, through the Rotary action group for peace Nigeria chapter, has donated delivery kits to some pregnant women and breastfeeding kits to nursing mothers in Katsina. The kits were distributed to no fewer than 60 less privileged women in Shinkafi community in Katsina Local Government Area (LGA) of the state on Monday. Speaking during the event, the Rotary North-West Zone-3 Coordinator, Alhaji Sa’idu Jibrin, said the gesture was aimed to assist the less privileged. Read Also: 17-Brigade offers free medical treatment for 700 people in Katsina “We’re giving out this support to the less privileged women not because the government cannot, but for us to complement their efforts at all levels. “Rotary action group for peace is also giving the support for us to contribute our quota towards the development of the country.” He explained that some of the items donated were diapers, medicated soaps, other bathing soaps, foods for babies, and mosquito nets. According to him, some of the items donated will assist and reduce the challenges faced by the less privileged pregnant women, especially during delivery. Sa’idu further advised the beneficiaries to make use of the items given to them, urging the women not to sell the kits. In his remarks, the acting District Head of Shinkafi, Alhaji Abdulrashid Abubakar, appreciated the gesture and assured to brief the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmuminu Kabir-Usman, about the development. He added that the support would go a long way in reducing the hardship some of the women faced during delivery, and also breastfeeding. According to him, some of the women being taken to hospital during labour cannot afford some of the things required for delivery. “Also, some of the new born babies are left without proper care, which is hazardous to their health especially the issue of malaria.” Some of the beneficiaries commended the Rotary action group for the gesture, and promised to use the items for the purpose they were provided for. The funeral was attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, and family members, including the Emir of Daura, His Royal Highness Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, who paid tribute to Buhari’s enduring legacy. The monarch praised the late president for his unwavering dedication to the emirate, Katsina State, and the Nigerian nation. Residents of Daura and visitors wept and prayed, reflecting on the life of a man who many regarded as a symbol of northern pride and a believer in national rebirth. Born on December 17, 1942, Muhammadu Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian military, serving as Head of State from 1983 to 1985, before returning as a democratically elected president in 2015. His two-term civilian administration focused on tackling insecurity, corruption, and revamping agriculture and infrastructure—though not without controversies and fierce criticism. National flags were flown at half-mast as Nigeria entered an official mourning period. Condolences have poured in from around the world, including from the European Union, African Union, United States, and United Kingdom. In a tribute, the African Union described Buhari as “a pan-African elder statesman whose leadership inspired reforms far beyond Nigeria’s borders.” As Daura settles into mourning, Nigerians across the country are reflecting on the complex legacy of a leader who remained deeply committed to the unity, sovereignty, and future of Nigeria. Buhari’s Body En Route to Hometown for Burial Rites

The motorcade departed from Katsina Airport shortly after the arrival of Buhari’s remains aboard a presidential jet, which touched down around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was present at the tarmac to receive the body, alongside top government officials. The remains of the late president were flown from London, where he passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 while undergoing treatment at a private clinic. Buhari’s Burial Rescheduled for Tuesday, July 15 in Daura

The burial of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been rescheduled from Monday to Tuesday, July 15, 2025. Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State announced the change while addressing journalists on Monday. He explained that the decision followed consultations with Buhari’s family and close associates in London, where the former president passed away. President Buhari died on Sunday in London after a prolonged illness that had not been made public.

Maituraka donates borehole, inverter to Katsina community mosque

A philanthropist,Alhaji Abdul’aziz Maituraka, has donated a borehole to a community Mosque in Daki Tara, Kwanar Damaga, Kofar Kaura Quarters, Katsina. Maituraka, the Special Assistant to the Deputy President of the Senate, also donated an inverter to supply power to the mosque. Speaking during the donation on Sunday, Maituraka, a chieftain of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), commended the members of the mosque committee for their commitment and dedication to modernising it. According to him, his door is always open for any support that will promote Islam and move the community and state forward. Maituraka, however, said it was necessary for them (Almajiris) to be self-reliant, in addition to their knowledge seeking, so that they can assist others. Maituraka also called on the leadership of the mosque to allow the residents of the community to fetch water from the borehole. The philanthropist seized the opportunity to thank friends, family members and all well-wishers for blessing the wedding of his daughter which took place on Saturday. In his remarks, the Chairman of the Katsina Local Government Area (LGA), Alhaji Isah Miqdad, commended Maituraka for sinking the borehole, saying that it would improve water supply in the area. Miqdad also promised to provide additional ceiling fans and other forms of support to the residents of the community. In response, the chairman of the mosque committee, Sheikh Hadi Balarabe, commended Maituraka for the support, calling on other wealthy individuals to support the religion as a multiplying reward.
