Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has sparked controversy with remarks suggesting that even if he decides to sell the state in order to fund development projects, it should not be the public’s concern.
The governor made the statement in a video clip televised on Arise TV on Friday morning, where he was responding to questions about the state’s financial management and borrowing practices.

His comments come against the backdrop of growing anxiety among residents, many of whom have taken to social media to express fears that the government may be over-relying on loans and questionable funding strategies.
Governor Bago, however, dismissed such concerns, insisting that his administration is focused on delivering infrastructural development and social services at an unprecedented scale. He maintained that securing funds, whether through loans, partnerships, or other unconventional means remains a leadership prerogative aimed at transforming Niger State.
