Professor Haruna Musa has emerged as the new Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), following a decisive victory in the university’s Congregation Parley. He secured a total of 853 votes, surpassing other contenders in an election that drew wide attention from the academic community.
The announcement was made via the university’s verified Facebook page, confirming Professor Musa’s triumph and marking a new chapter in the leadership of one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions of higher learning.
A seasoned academic and administrator, Professor Musa currently serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) at BUK. His academic journey began at Government Secondary School, Danbatta in 1985, after which he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Bayero University in 1991. He went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Polymer Chemistry in 1999 and later earned a PhD in the same field from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, in 2009.

Over the years, Professor Musa has held several key positions within the university. These include Head of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Chairperson of the BUK branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and Deputy Director at the Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainability Transitions (CREST). His extensive experience and dedication to academic excellence have earned him broad respect from colleagues and students alike.
His emergence as Vice Chancellor is seen as a reflection of the confidence the university community has in his leadership, vision, and capacity to steer BUK toward greater academic, administrative, and developmental achievements.
Professor Musa will succeed Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, whose tenure as the 11th substantive Vice Chancellor began in August 2020.
