Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been honoured by the Federal Government following their historic fifth consecutive victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received the team at the State House on Monday evening, where he announced that each player would be awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a $100,000 cash reward, and a housing unit in recognition of their remarkable achievement.

D’Tigress clinched their seventh AfroBasket title on Sunday with a commanding 78-64 win over Mali in the final, reaffirming their dominance in African women’s basketball and sparking celebrations across the country.
Commending the team for their discipline, resilience, and patriotism, President Tinubu described D’Tigress as ambassadors of national excellence and role models for aspiring athletes.
“This victory is not just for basketball; it’s a win for Nigeria. You have demonstrated that with unity, hard work, and focus, Nigerians can conquer the world,” the President said.
The reward mirrors similar recognition recently given to the Super Falcons following their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) triumph in Morocco, as the Tinubu-led administration continues to highlight sports as a vital platform for national pride and unity.
