The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived in Benue State following the horrifying massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, where nearly 250 residents were reportedly killed in a brutal attack by unidentified assailants.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the IGP’s visit in a statement shared via its official Facebook page on Monday, noting that additional tactical units have been deployed to help restore order and address the deteriorating security situation in the state.
The attack, which occurred on the outskirts of Makurdi, saw scores of innocent civilians burned alive during a coordinated nighttime assault on the Yelewata community. Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the perpetrators.
In the aftermath, hundreds of Benue youths took to the streets of Makurdi on Sunday, staging a protest to demand justice and draw national and international attention to the persistent violence affecting communities across the state.
